Meet Women Leaders in Agriculture and Sustainable Food Systems Rural women play a pivotal role in advancing sustainable agriculture and strengthening food systems across Morocco. Through vision, expertise, and collaborative leadership, they drive innovation and foster resilient communities. Among these inspiring figures is Mrs. Zahra El Habboussi, President of Al Houda Cooperative in Ain Beida, Ouazzane. Through her commitment to producing high-quality extra virgin olive oil, she’s building not only a successful enterprise but also a space where women gain confidence, skills, and a stronger voice in their communities. Her journey embodies the power of purpose, resilience, and collaboration — values that continue to shape the future of sustainable agriculture in Morocco.

On this week’s What’s Up, four major news stories emerged. First, UM6P launched the 2025-2026 academic year, which reflects its expanding role as a centre of excellence in education, research, and sustainable innovation. With over 800 new students welcomed across its Benguerir and Rabat campuses, UM6P continues to fulfil its mission of developing future leaders equipped with multidisciplinary skills in science, technology, and entrepreneurship. The university’s strong academic framework combines rigorous coursework with experiential learning and a vibrant entrepreneurial ecosystem. It offers 45 programmes and attracts a diverse body of nearly 8,800 students from 40 countries, with women comprising 55% of the student population. This inclusive approach encourages innovation and prepares graduates to address regional and global challenges. At the same time, UM6P’s social impact initiatives were demonstrated by the 18th Open Innovation Lab organised under the Al Moutmir program, focusing on empowering women’s agricultural cooperatives through collective action towards sustainable farming models. With over 200 participants, this event encouraged discussions on leadership, financing, and scaling innovative impacts, supported by key partners such as UN Women and Crédit Agricole du Maroc. Strategic institutional progress includes a new partnership framework with the National Initiative for Human Development (INDH), aimed at leveraging academic and technological resources to improve human development projects through innovation and digitalisation. Additionally, the Hydrogen & Green Ammonia Symposium held at the Benguerir campus reaffirmed UM6P’s leadership in renewable energy research, showcasing cutting-edge progress in low-carbon hydrogen production and green ammonia technologies crucial to the global energy transition. These combined efforts collectively reflect UM6P’s comprehensive vision of linking education, science, and community engagement to promote sustainable development in Morocco and beyond. I had the pleasure of participating in the International Conference on Rural Women, organized by the Al Moutmir Initiative in Ben Guerir, on the theme "Women-led Agricultural Cooperatives: Collective Power for Sustainable and Inclusive Agriculture." My presentation focused on two topics: 1- National and international strategies and programs for promoting agricultural cooperatives in the Oriental region 2- Collective resilience of cooperatives in the Oriental region in the face of environmental and socioeconomic challenges. #ORMVAM_GG #Almourir #GEWSA

On this World Food Day, we celebrate the power of collective action to build a future where food is nutritious, sustainable, and accessible to all. At Al Moutmir, we believe that resilient food systems are the foundation of thriving communities and a healthier planet. In a world facing climate uncertainty and growing food insecurity, our mission is clear: empower farmers to lead the way toward sustainable agriculture. Through science, innovation, and inclusive farming extension, we are helping farmers adopt practices that regenerate soils, optimize water use, and reduce environmental impact—while enhancing productivity, quality, and nutrition. Our approach is deeply rooted in farmer centricity. We walk hand in hand with farmers, co-creating solutions that are tailored to their realities, and ensuring that women and youth are at the forefront of this transformation. Science and innovation are not optional—they are essential. From digital agronomy tools to climate-smart inputs, we are bridging the gap between research and the field, turning knowledge into impact. Partnerships are the engine of progress. By uniting efforts across sectors—academia, industry, and communities—we are accelerating the transition to food systems that are climate-resilient, inclusive, and nutrition-sensitive. Because when we invest in farmers, we invest in the future. A future where no one goes hungry, where climate action is rooted in the soil, and where every harvest brings hope. Let’s continue to grow together—for people, for the planet, for generations to come. #WorldFoodDay #SustainableAgriculture #ZeroHunger #ClimateAction #FoodSystemsTransformation #FarmingExtension #ScienceForImpact #InnovationInAgriculture #PartnershipsForChange #AfricaFeedingAfrica #BetterNutrition #ResilientFarming
