The UN General Assembly (UNGA) is the main policy-making organ of the United Nations. Comprising all 193 Member States, it is the most representative organ of the Organization, and it provides a unique forum for multilateral discussion of the full spectrum of international issues covered by the United Nations Charter.
Gender equality and women’s empowerment continue to face substantial challenges globally. Women are still disproportionately affected by persistent poverty, armed conflicts, climate change and economic crises.
As 2025 marks the 80" anniversary of the United Nations and the thirtieth anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, we are reminded of the urgent need to break down barriers that prevent women from fully participating in economic life.

Press Statements With regard to the escalating violence in Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, the President of the General Assembly called on all parties to the conflict to immediately cease fire and re-commit to the significant peace efforts undertaken within the Luanda process.
Both Tom Fletcher, the UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator and Ms. Mirjana Spoljaric, President of the International Committee of the Red Cross joined President Yang in delivering opening remarks. An interactive panel discussion was then followed by interventions from Member States and observers of the UN General Assembly.
The plenary meeting on Landlocked Developing Countries on Tuesday 28 January 2025 focused on the new Programme of Action for 2024-2034 adopted in December 2024. At the meeting, President Yang said that by adopting this Programme, we support the 32 landlocked developing countries in charting a new path of transformation. He added that only with solidarity and concerted efforts can we advance together towards a brighter future for all – where no country is left behind. He welcomed the targets of the Programme of Action, to establish, inter alia:
Regional agriculture research hubs,
Regional digital platforms,
A dedicated infrastructure investment finance facility, and
A high-level panel of experts to identify ways and means to ensure seamless sea access
