In class 3-3 of Yomiyama North Junior High, transfer student Kouichi Sakakibara makes his return after taking a sick leave for the first month of school. Among his new classmates, he is inexplicably drawn toward Mei Misaki—a reserved girl with an eyepatch whom he met in the hospital during his absence. But none of his classmates acknowledge her existence; they warn him not to acquaint himself with things that do not exist. Against their words of caution, Kouichi befriends Mei—soon learning of the sinister truth behind his friends' apprehension.

The ominous rumors revolve around a former student of the class 3-3. However, no one will share the full details of the grim event with Kouichi. Engrossed in the curse that plagues his class, Kouichi sets out to discover its connection to his new friend. As a series of tragedies arise around them, it is now up to Kouichi, Mei, and their classmates to unravel the eerie mystery—but doing so will come at a hefty price.

Easily misunderstood by the majority of people who watched it and thought it was merely a gore-filled spectacle with an uncompelling plot that failed to deliver much substance, but that’s truly not what Another is trying to present as a psychological horror anime series. If people have a good understanding of what Final Destination is about and how it portrays the fragility of life that the most terrifying aspect of existence isn’t ghosts or supernatural entities but rather ourselves and the world revolving around us each passing day, they would see the true essence behind Another. Telling the story of Yomiyama North Middle School and ... the mysterious curse born from making contact with something that should not exist. The anime exposes the inevitable consequences of disturbing the balance between life and death, showing how someone becomes both a victim and an obscured figure between those fractured boundaries as someone blamed as the source of a chain of deaths born from superstition. Plot and storytelling are compelling, complemented by intense gore and meticulously directed death scenes, enhanced by an exceptional soundtrack and music that capture the perfect atmosphere they aim to convey. It’s something that initially seems simple and formulaic, but as the anime unfolds, it reveals that it is not what you expect and that is where its true brilliance lies.

Mixed Feelings

Another, can be best described as an horror anime which tries to do so much, but the execution of the anime is sadly lacking which feels like it falls short. Another is an anime which uses a mix of horror and mystery to tell a story about a class which is being killed one by one, while a new student Koichi is introduced to this dark world and school, and meets a girl called misaki, who might be real or not.

The opening, of the series is great. The first 3 episodes is brimming with atmosphere and while the characters are somewhat lacking in those ... 3 episodes, the mystery and beautiful score and nice animation makes up for it. In ways the first 3 episodes are the best..but slowly when the series goes on that mystery feels thrown out the window and the characters become more bland and uninteresting, with a story which in ways feels like it tries, but sadly the characters are the reason for the story to work.

The story itself is good, it feels like 2 story in 1 a mystery about a girl and who this Misaki person and the second part being a story about stopping a curse which is killing students. In ways the story while seems messy does connect, but saying that. The story does feel like it throws so much ideas in 12 episodes that it feels like it's balancing a bit much. This includes the mystery and how to stop the curse, with one episode exploring the idea of the curse and how it affects anyone who leaves the city. In ways while It does try it best to balance both, it feels lost. The ending also, while cool idea, feels messy and in ways feels unachieved and just kind of shallow, which will leave the audience head scratching.

Saying that the characters, except 2 are really bland. It feels like they are cookie cutter of characters you have seen before..and while some might get attached, it feels like the characters are at best interesting, but never expanded on and at worst forgettable people who are there to be killed of. While some characters are fine and some like Misaki there are to expand the story same with reiko. All the other characters don't feel like they do anything to me at all..and come of quite forgettable.

The tone also, is wild. An example of this comes from episode 3..which the first 3 episodes are great mystery episodes and when episode 3 ends..it feels like you watched and different scene from a different show. And throughout then it becomes a mess of a show where it has overtop deaths and at same time doing that while being serious. It comes of quite tone deaf and in ways makes the show more laughable than being serious.

Saying that though, there is some good stuff. The animation while looks bland, at times looks nice, this includes the city and world, which even after those 3 episodes tries to bring an creepy atmosphere like it was advertised, and the sound design is excelent. each crunch and sound is amazingly well done, which at times actually made me jump and shiver just by it alone and the score, while not perfect, is nice which uses quiet ambient music and when things get serious becomes quite tense. While I won't remember the music, at least it helps to try and bring the spookiness.

Overall another is a show which tries, but sadly falls on its face at the third episode where it becomes a tonally messy, but somewhat entertaining moments with ideas which sounding great on paper sadly don't work because of the way execution or how the characters sadly are written.

Another is a really interesting anime. I probably would've liked it more if it was a fast-paced movie instead of a 12-episode series, because the pacing is very slow.

Another is an anime that wears the horror and mystery tags proudly, but whether it lives up to either is another story. While it starts with a chilling atmosphere and a mysterious premise, the series slowly spirals into a muddled mix of repetitive shock value and lackluster storytelling.

The narrative centers around an ominous curse and a class surrounded by inexplicable tragedies. It sounds intriguing, and at first, it is, but the intrigue quickly fades as the mystery ... stalls. Much of the show's runtime is spent circling the same vague questions without making real headway. Instead of unraveling the mystery piece by piece, the plot feels like it’s constantly resetting itself, leaving viewers stuck in a loop of superficial suspense.

Characters often behave passively, rarely taking action or making intelligent choices to solve the mystery they're trapped in. Instead of careful deduction or gradual discovery, the show leans on overly dramatic events and increasingly implausible situations to move the plot forward. When key information finally surfaces, it often feels random or frustratingly delayed.

As a horror anime, Another favors shock over psychological terror. The deaths, frequent and theatrical, tend to be sudden and exaggerated, leaning more into spectacle than fear. While some viewers may find this entertaining, others will likely feel that these moments lack emotional weight or narrative purpose. There's little buildup or payoff, just a parade of tragic accidents that start to feel more absurd than scary.

Another does attempt to mislead and twist the audience’s expectations with a few red herrings along the way. While these efforts are appreciated, they aren't enough to overcome the show’s larger issues, mainly its inability to develop its mystery in a satisfying or coherent way.

By the end, Another leaves you with more frustration than fear. The resolution feels rushed, and many of the earlier plot threads end up having little impact on the final outcome. The mystery, which should be the heart of the story, is undercut by character inaction and a reliance on last-minute revelations.

At its core, Another is a series with potential that never quite figures out how to use it. With strong visuals and an ominous tone, it draws you in, but with weak plotting and shallow scares, it doesn’t give you much to hold onto. Fans of horror anime may still find moments to enjoy, but those seeking a thoughtful mystery or psychological depth might want to look elsewhere.
