As part of activities commemorating the 2025 UN World Food Day, the Society for Family Health (SFH) joined the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, EverGreen, and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in a National Dialogue focused on improving food security and nutrition in Nigeria. The event, themed “Hand in Hand for Better Food and a Better Future,” provided a platform to explore data-driven pathways for strengthening sustainable agriculture, reducing food loss and waste, and improving nutrition outcomes across the country. Dignitaries at the event included the Honourable Minister of State for Agriculture, Dr. Abdullahi Sahabi, OON; the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Health; the FAO Country Director; key representatives from MDAs; civil society organizations; youth farmer groups; and the media. Representing SFH’s Managing Director/CEO, the Assistant Chief, Policy, Advocacy, and Government Engagement (ACPAGE), Dayyabu Mahmud Yusuf, delivered a goodwill message emphasizing the critical linkage between food security, nutrition, and maternal and child health outcomes. Drawing insights from the 2024 Nigeria Demographic and Health Survey (NDHS), he highlighted the need to promote nutrition education and leverage locally available foods to prevent malnutrition and reduce dependence on imported foods. SFH’s Director of Nutrition, Muhammad Ibrahim, also featured in a panel discussion, where he underscored the need for community engagement as a vital element of the food security value chain—from production to consumption. He noted that achieving better production, better nutrition, and a better environment requires active participation of communities and farmers educated on producing nutritious food. Through engagements like this, SFH reaffirms its commitment to advancing policies and partnerships that promote sustainable food systems, nutrition security, and improved health outcomes for all Nigerians.

Nigeria Advances Innovation in Maternal and Neonatal Health Through Design for Demand Workshop Nigeria is further advancing the ongoing maternal and neonatal health reform through a Design for Demand Workshop, convening frontline demand creation teams and partners from five states: Kebbi, Kaduna, Kano, Bauchi and Borno States. What sets this gathering apart is its alignment with the MAMII (Maternal and Neonatal Health Acceleration in Impacted Interventions) strategy—a Sector-Wide Approach (SWAp) that unites federal institutions and state governments in co-creating solutions that are community-focused and impact-driven. This workshop applies a Human-Centred Design (HCD) lens to deepen and optimize the MAMII framework, particularly the community engagement pillar. Using a “pathways methodology,” the workshop organizes service delivery around the unique vulnerabilities of women ensuring that the most at-risk populations receive bespoke, life-saving interventions delivered in culturally acceptable and effective bundles. By translating empathy into action, MAMII continues to demonstrate how SWAp principles can accelerate real, measurable improvements in maternal and newborn health outcomes across Nigeria. This convening is led by the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare Nigeria, through the SWAp Coordination Office with the support of the World Bank Group. Innovative demand creation initiatives were showcased by UNICEF Nigeria, CCSI, Pathfinder International, Society for Family Health Nigeria, and NOIPolls. #MAMII #MaternalHealth #NeonatalHealth #HCD

In commemoration of the Global Handwashing Day 2025, Society for Family Health (SFH), through its WASH for Healthy Lives (W4HL) project, held sensitisation activities across schools in its project implementation states (Edo and Nasarawa) in a bid to promote proper hand hygiene among students. The global event, marked annually on the 15th of October, emphasises the importance of handwashing with soap and water as a simple yet powerful way to prevent diseases and improve overall health. This year’s theme, “Be a handwashing hero”, focused on fostering a culture of hand hygiene across communities, especially among children who serve as agents of change. In Edo State, the team visited Oba Ovoramen Junior Secondary School, Iguorakhi, where over 100 students participated in interactive sessions and practical demonstrations of the ten recommended steps of proper handwashing. Similarly, in Nasarawa State, over 250 students from Government Science Secondary School, Obi LGA took part in the sensitisation session facilitated by the W4HL team. Students were educated on critical handwashing moments and guided through proper handwashing techniques. Educational materials and peer educator guides were distributed to reinforce the lessons. In both states, the students and school authority pledged to maintain and promote regular handwashing habits in their schools and communities. The activities not only enhanced students’ knowledge but also strengthened the schools’ commitment to sustaining WASH standards.

Society for Family Health (SFH) joined key stakeholders at the 13th #Kaduna State Council on Health, held from 8th to 10th October 2025, to discuss strategies for strengthening health systems and advancing global health security. Established under the National Health Act (2014), the Council serves as the state’s highest policy-making body for health, shaping interventions and financing priorities. The 2025 Council, themed “Global Health Security: Strengthening Health Systems for Resilience in Kaduna State,” convened 405 delegates, including the Deputy Governor, Dr Hadiza Sabuwa Balarabe; Commissioner for Health, Hajiya Umma K. Ahmed; other commissioners, health secretaries, medical directors, development partners, academics, and CSOs. Representing SFH, the Assistant Chief, Policy, Advocacy, and Government Engagement (AC-PAGE) Dayyabu Mahmud Yusuf, delivered a goodwill message commending the Kaduna State Government for sustaining regular Council meetings. He appreciated the strong partnership between SFH and the state, noting Kaduna’s unique dual role as both a donor and implementing partner to SFH. He reaffirmed SFH’s commitment to providing continued technical assistance for health system strengthening and supporting the implementation of Council resolutions. A highlight of the event was the launch of three key policy documents by the Deputy Governor: The Kaduna State Human Resource for Health, the Human Resource for Health Strategic Plan, and the Task Shifting and Task Sharing Policy—all developed with SFH’s technical and financial support. SFH also featured prominently in the Health Financing session, where its representative joined a panel discussion on “Enhancing Health Financing Towards Attaining Universal Health Coverage.” SFH advocated for sustained advocacy to ensure the release of equity funds for enrolling vulnerable populations in the state health insurance scheme and for improved targeting to engage the informal sector. Additionally, the SFH Regional Manager, Northwest, Ibrahim Murtala, presented three memos on behalf of the IntegratE and A360 Projects. The Council reviewed 60 memos, approving 44, stepping down 15, and withdrawing 1. Key resolutions included establishing a Health Sustainability Trust Fund, institutionalising electronic health records, implementing the Task Shifting and Task Sharing Policy, integrating community pharmacy and #PPMV private health sector data into DHIS2, creating a Private Health Establishment Authority, adopting the Integrated Sustainable Health Supplies System guidelines, and incorporating #mentalhealth and #harmreduction services into community systems. SFH’s active participation in the Kaduna State Council on Health reaffirms its thought leadership and strategic role in supporting evidence-based policy-making, promoting sustainable health financing, and strengthening health systems toward achieving Universal Health Coverage and health security in #Nigeria.
