So we are Fourth in the Global Innovation Index

Standard YouTube Licence Jane Lambert According to the Global Innovation Index 2021   which the WIPO (World Intellectual Property Organization), the UN agency for intellectual property, published on Monday 20 Sept 2021, the United Kingdom came 4th in the global rankings behind Switzerland, Sweden and the United States of America. Bearing in mind that the UK lies 13th in the number of patent applications to the world's top 20 patent offices according to the World Intellectual Property Indicators   which is also published by the WIPO (see UK Innovation Strategy , 12 Aug 2021 NIPC Inventors Club ), the UK's position near the top of the Global Innovation Index is surprising. No British Cluster in the World's Top 10 Science and Tech Hotspots

Standard youtube Licence Jane Lambert Cities have been motors of innovation and creativity throughout history,  Think of Periclean Athens, renaissance Florence, enlightenment Edinburgh and Silicon Valley.  Every year, the WIPO (the UN specialist agency for intellectual property) publishes a ranking of science and technology hotspots.   The list is compiled using the following methodology: "Inventors listed in patent applications under WIPO’s Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT), spanning the years 2014 to 2018.  Authors listed in scientific publications in the Web of Science’s Science Citation Index Expanded (SCIE) and covering the same period.  The geocoding of inventor and author addresses and the use of density-based spatial clustering of applications with noise (DBSCAN) algorithm to the geocoded inventor and author points." UK rises to Number 4 in the Global Innovation Index

Standard YouTube Licence  Jane Lambert The Global Innovation Index  (GII") is an annual ranking of countries by their capacity for innovation. It is compiled by Cornell University business school , INSEAD (Institut Européen d'Administration des Affaires)  and the WIPO (World Intellectual Property Organization) . No British Regions in the World's Top 10 Science and Technology Hotspots

WIPO Head Office in Geneva Author Merarton Licence Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 2.0 International Source Wikipedia WIPO Jane Lambert On 7 Jan 2019, the World Intellectual Property Organization ("WIPO") published a list of The World’s Top 10 Science and Technology Hotspots .  A "hotspot" is essentially a city or region with a leading university and cluster of high tech businesses,  The WIPO ranks these hotspots by the number of scientific papers and international patent applications that originate from the city or region.  For example, from the Tokyo-Yokohama region, which is the world's leading hotspot, there were 141,584 publications and 104,746 patent filings. The University of Tokyo was the leading scientific organization and Mitsubishi Electric the top applicant in that region.
