🇨🇦 UN-Habitat (United Nations Human Settlements Programme)’s #UrbanOctober is a perfect opportunity to spotlight impact stories from cities driving the circular transition—such as Montréal. In 2022, Circle Economy worked with the City of Montréal to deliver a baseline assessment of its circularity. By 2024, this evolved into a Circularity Gap Report (CGR®) Montréal and the city’s first-ever circular economy roadmap. Just one year after the roadmap’s adoption, its impact is already visible: ✔️$7 million for the circular transition pledged by the city, with a leverage power of $100 million in investment ✔️20 circular actions included in the first 3-year plan As Executive Committee member Marie-Andrée Mauger put it: “Circularity Gap Report provides us with our first quantifiable portrait of Montréal’s economy. It is an essential tool for mobilising Montréal's entrepreneurial forces around our ambitious goals”. 💡 Discover the CGR’s potential to set measurable, evidence-based circular economy goals: https://lnkd.in/eVU9KiR2 Read the CGR Montréal here: https://lnkd.in/ecDPecSc #UrbanOctober #CircularEconomy #CircularCities #Canada Comment: Read the CGR Montréal here: https://lnkd.in/ecDPecSc

According to the Circularity Gap Report 2025 (CGR®), a staggering 38% of all materials we consume annually end up in long-lasting, human-made structures, often referred to as ‘stocks’. Every year, more and more materials are extracted, refined and fed into our homes, transportation networks, cars, and appliances. These materials will remain locked there for decades, but not forever—roughly a third of materials in stocks are demolished or discarded every year. With this in mind, how we design, build, and use these assets today will determine whether they become tomorrow’s waste or stand the test of time. In our latest article, authored by Luba Glazunova, we zoom in on material stocks and their potential to become an urban mine of tomorrow: https://lnkd.in/e6g-TjQg

Doughnut economics has recently been adapted to highway maintenance. Be among the first to implement this groundbreaking framework! Circle Economy developed the Highways Doughnut toolkit in collaboration with the highway authorities of Cornwall, Hampshire and Somerset as part of the Live Labs 2 project. Now, we are offering training programmes on a fee basis for local authorities and their contractors responsible for highway maintenance. 👉The two training offers are: 1️⃣Training of Trainers Programme – Equips participants to become Highways Doughnut Champions within their organisation, enabling them to independently facilitate Doughnut evaluations. 2️⃣Trial Programme – A practical, hands-on programme where participants “learn by doing” through applying the toolkit to real-world projects and strategies within their authority or organisation. 👉What you will learn: 🔹Understand how Doughnut Economics can be applied to highway planning and maintenance as a structured way to evaluate ecological and social impacts in tandem. 🔹Gain tools to perform holistic assessments of road maintenance strategies and projects. 🔹Learn how to assess and track performance against ambitions like biodiversity protection, community well-being, climate resilience, and resource circularity. 🔹Strengthen cross-team and cross-entity collaboration, ensuring that authorities and contractors work together to align long-term visions with practical, on-the-ground delivery. Our colleague Kristin Strandberg, together with project partners, will present the Doughnut Toolkit this Thursday during Re:London’s Circular Economy Week. The toolkit provides a practical framework for the highways sector to make decisions at both strategic and project levels that meet people’s needs while staying within planetary boundaries. 📱💻 Your old phone isn’t just “junk” — it’s gold, copper, and rare earth metals waiting for a second life. A recent study by TNO shows that selective recovery of critical raw materials (CRM) from e-waste could contribute up to 31% of the EU’s current CRM demand. While recovering valuable materials from e-waste is crucial, preventing such waste can have an even greater impact. That is why the EU introduced the ‘right-to-repair’ directive last year to extend the lifetime of existing devices. These measures are as much needed as they are timely. Our Circularity Gap Report 2025 shows that the lifetime of appliances in the EU falls below the global average. The OECD, a club of mostly high-income countries, has the shortest appliance lifespan of any region. If we want to keep valuable materials in use and cut the environmental cost of extraction, we must: 🔄 Repair more, replace less ♻ Recycle electronics at certified facilities 🛠 Support policies that make products easier to fix and upgrade Discover more in the Circularity Gap Report 2025: https://lnkd.in/evGjxUQG #CircularEconomy #RightToRepair #CircularityGapReport

👷 Here comes another inspiring impact story from our #UrbanOctober series, highlighting how circularity benefits local communities. The city of Gamagori in Japan has taken a people-centred approach to the circular transition. By boosting circular jobs, the city aims to propel the whole urban economy towards circularity. Circle Economy helped Gamagori in this endeavour by mapping circular jobs and developing an interactive dashboard that: 🔹Connects circularity to economic growth and job creation 🔹Visualises key data for policymakers 🔹Provides case studies and recommendations The first real-world outcomes are already here: 👉5 pioneering demo projects launched with Toyota, Daiseki and Curelabo 👉The city rolled out a Circular Action Plan with grants for local businesses 💡 If you want to unlock circular jobs in your city, contact us to develop a similar jobs dashboard: https://lnkd.in/eVU9KiR2 #UrbanOctober #CircularJobs #CircularEconomy #Cities

'Circular Public Procurement in Cities' is out! Discover how this guidance document can benefit your city 👇 Around 11% of the EU’s greenhouse gas emissions result from public procurement. Eliminating them could lead to annual savings of up to €884 billion in climate-related costs. Moreover, public procurement is one of the most impactful tools for cities to drive the circular transition by spurring demand for circular goods and services. We’re proud to share the new guidance document developed by Circle Economy and ICLEI as part of The Circular City Centre – C3. It is a step-by-step guide for municipalities to embed circularity in their public procurement, including: ✅ Real-life examples from across Europe ✅ Practical criteria for circular procurement of works, goods & services ✅ Insights from actual tenders 🔗 Download the guide and start applying it in your work: https://lnkd.in/eqCVjamf European Investment Bank (EIB) Circular Cities and Regions Initiative (CCRI) | #InvestEU | European Commission

A staggering 38% of all materials we consume annually end up in long-lasting, human-made structures, such as buildings, cars, and roads. How we design, build, and use these assets today will determine whether they become tomorrow’s waste or stand the test of time. This #UrbanOctober, we reflect on the potential of cities to become the urban mines of tomorrow. Why are so few materials locked in stocks being reused? And what are cities around the world doing today to address this? Discover the answers in our latest blog article by Luba Glazunova, based on the Circularity Gap Report 2025.
