New R&D Direction at Circle Solution In 2026, we will launch a research program exploring CO₂ storage resulting from the use of recycled biobased materials in new microfoam structures. We aim to understand how stored biogenic carbon can be retained for longer periods within these materials, and what this means for structural performance and climate impact. Hadden we de herkomst van de papierbalen beter in beeld gehad, dan was een groot probleem in de papierfabriek veel sneller opgelost. Een vervuiling die zich bij verhitting gedroeg als popcorn zorgde voor maandenlange verstoringen in het productieproces. Machines raakten vervuild, papier werd beschadigd – met hoge kosten en afkeur als gevolg. Daarom is digitale registratie essentieel. Meer dan 80% van het papier in Europa komt uit gerecyclede balen. Elke baal kan echter bestaan uit talloze papierstromen – van kantoorpapier tot verpakkingen en kranten. Zonder zicht op herkomst, kwaliteit en stabiliteit ontstaan onzekerheden die leiden tot: Ontregelde machines, overmatig gebruik van additieven en Productiestilstand met hoge kosten en afkeur. Bij Circle Solution starten we binnenkort een studie naar digitale traceerbaarheid van papierbalen. Ons doel: minder storingen, lagere kosten en een duurzamere papierketen.

How good is recycled paper really? An in-depth look at fiber quality, regional differences, and technological impact Recycled paper is playing an increasingly central role in the production of packaging, board, and paper products. It is widely available, has a lower environmental footprint than virgin pulp, and aligns with the goals of a circular economy. However, in practice, “recycled paper” is far from uniform. Its quality is shaped by a complex interaction of fiber structure, origin, contamination levels, and processing technology. A recent large-scale industrial research initiative mapped the quality of over 100 recycled paper streams from suppliers across the Netherlands, Germany, France, and the UK. With over 30,000 individual fiber-level measurements—covering length, fines content, curl, contamination, ash, and more—combined with laboratory testing (e.g., SCT and tensile strength), the project revealed a comprehensive picture of how recycled fibers actually perform. Recycled paper has the potential to reduce both cost and environmental impact—if we move beyond assumptions and manage quality based on objective data. The right fiber, in the right place, for the right application: that’s where recycled paper becomes not just a circular resource, but a high-performance one.
