Over ons
Dear Hunter is a cartopological research practice, managed by Marlies Vermeulen and Remy Kroese. Referring to the behaviour and methods of hunters, we produce alternative maps and atlases through qualitative fieldwork which incorporates relatively long periods of living and working on-site. Hunting after so-called sea monsters, symbolic creatures that used to be depicted on maps from earlier times, our maps contain specific, symbolic and ‘intimate’ knowledge. As sea monsters enchanted viewers, educated them about what could be found in the sea, about the fears of sailors, indicated which parts still needed to be conquered and, at times, highlighted the overall importance of religion to the conquerors, the maps of Dear Hunter offer a different perspective on an existing situation and also lead to insights applicable within spatial, economical or cultural development. Because we mediate between user and designer, our clients are (especially) governments, local authorities and design agencies. We also give lectures and workshops for educational and professional purpose. We work with a.o. the Dutch governmental organization Staatsbosbeheer, cities and municipalities in the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany and Sweden and the universities Zuyd hogeschool (NL), RWTH Aachen (D) and KU Leuven (B).

Drawing, talking, observing, and taking part in daily life. Over the past weeks in Stockholm, these practices have slowly been shaping a new map. Both larger mechanisms and small facts find their way onto the paper. For instance: did you know that drinking water in Stockholm is stored for 10–15 years in Lake Mälaren before reaching the tap? Our time in Stockholm is part of the project Turning the Tide, in collaboration with Intercult, Wiener Bildungsakademie, IKM Gdansk, Artit and Fablevision, financially supported by Creative Europe. 📍 Follow our updates to learn about the glacial rebound and how this affects climate change effects in Sweden via Instagram (Institute of Cartopology (Berghut Halverwege)! #TurningTheTide #Stockholm #Sweden #ArtisticResearch #Cartopology #Water

#FreeTheMap #cartografie #cartopologie #cartopology #HenkVanHoutum #borderencyclopaedia #mapping #inclusievekaarten #InstituteofCartopology #dearhunter #visualpolitics #alternatievekaarten

Here’s a beautiful recap of the outcomes of the Evia International Residencies — co-organised by Dear Hunter — in which we took part ourselves by mapping climate-related topics on the island of Evia, Greece. These actions are a part of Turning the Tide, a pan-European project co-funded by the Creative Europe Programme of the European Union. Through residencies, labs, and cultural actions in coastal and climate-affected regions across Europe, the project brings together artists, communities, and institutions to co-create responses to environmental challenges. For more information about the project: https://lnkd.in/d6dHfw5F
Explore how arts & culture becomes a tool for healing environmental trauma—starting in Evia.

The past few days on Evia have been marked by devastating wildfires. Both in the south and — even more so — in the north, the landscapes have turned surreal, frightening, and desolate. We visited Kokkinomilia, a small village where over 25 homes and the church were destroyed, and where everyone was forced to flee as the surrounding forests burned. At a mountain hut, 581 meters high — where we enjoyed some of the best Greek food we’ve ever tasted — we met Kiki, the hut keeper. With remarkable calm, she shared her stories of trauma, uncertainty, and deep distrust in government support. Kiki told us: if another fire comes, she and the villagers will not leave again. They will stay — standing together, relying on their community and connection to the land, just as they always have. If only we were half as brave and rooted as Kiki and her fellow villagers. Thank you, Kiki, for the inspiring conversation. Now it’s our task to map and share the story of Kokkinomilia. 🌍❤️ Turning the Tide is a partnership of Dear Hunter with: Intercult, Artit, Wiener Bildungsakademie, Fablevision Scotland, IKM Gdansk, Creative Europe, Creative Europe Desk NL, Institute of Cartopology (Berghut Halverwege).

FIELDWORK UPDATE: We’ve been on Evia for almost a week now, as part of the Turning the Tide project. This is the Lilas river – dry for most of the year, yet recently the cause of devastating floods. In this video, we’re standing in its empty bed. It’s hard to imagine how violent it can become after torrential rain. Water doesn’t need to be visible to leave deep marks. And Evia is one of the places in Europe where the effects of climate change hit hard and fast – with floods, wildfires, and droughts colliding in ever shorter cycles. With Turning the Tide, we explore how artists and researchers can work with water – not just as an ecological force, but also as a cultural, social and political one. What futures are we heading towards in the face of extreme weather? And are we still able – or willing – to turn the tide? Watch. Listen. And if you have thoughts on what we shouldn’t overlook while we’re here on Evia – please let us know.
