🤩 When we talk about innovative solutions, it's not always about finding something "better"—sometimes, it's about finding a safe and viable alternative. 🔰 The clinical trial "doi: 10.3390/children12081028" investigated by Prof. Sloots' group on a cream with potato protease enzyme inhibitors for preventing severe diaper rash in children. While the results were comparable to a leading panthenol cream, the study’s true value is in demonstrating that a plant-based, protease-inhibiting approach is both feasible and safe for this application. 💡 We believe this kind of research is critical for exploring new, gentle, and effective ways to address common health issues. It shows that the potential for natural ingredients is not just theoretical but is being rigorously tested in clinical settings. 🥗 How can iron therapy be optimized to address both individual patient needs and population-level iron deficiency interventions? 💡 Iron deficiency is a major contributor to the global burden of disease, affecting children, premenopausal women, and populations in low and middle-income countries. Importantly, anaemia is only one of its consequences; clinical and functional impairments can occur even when anaemia is not present. 🤒 Iron deprivation arises when total body stores are low or when inflammation restricts iron availability, particularly through the action of hepcidin, the key regulator of systemic iron homeostasis and balance (see diagram). This complex physiology underlies why oral iron supplementation, though first-line therapy in most cases, may have variable efficacy. High-dose oral iron or iron administration during inflammation can trigger hepcidin upregulation, reducing absorption efficiency. 💉 💊 Modern treatment strategies now include advanced parenteral iron formulations, enabling rapid and safe total-dose replacement. At the same time, underlying causes like malabsorption, gastrointestinal blood loss, or chronic disease should always be investigated. Screening for coeliac disease and gastrointestinal lesions remains essential in adults presenting with iron deficiency anaemia. In parallel, population-level interventions, including iron supplementation programs in low-income countries, are essential for achieving the WHO Global Nutrition Targets. 🩺 How have you seen iron therapy optimized in your practice, both for individual patients and broader public health initiatives? The First Step in Obesity Management: Partnering with Physiology for Lasting Change 🫀 We often hear that managing obesity starts with lifestyle, and that's true. But for many, their body's physiology can be a significant barrier, making even the initial steps feel overwhelming and hard to sustain. 📑 New clinical insights are shedding light on how targeted, short-term support for central appetite regulation can make a crucial difference. By gently influencing the brain's natural hunger and fullness signals, we can help patients gain the early momentum they need to meaningfully engage with weight loss. 🧠 For example, a recent review in Obesity (2024) found that when patients received this type of physiological support alongside comprehensive behavioral and dietary counseling, they achieved significant early progress. This included up to 14% body weight loss over 12 weeks, often accompanied by increased motivation, reduced cravings, and improved energy – all vital factors for continuing the journey. (Gadde KM et al., Obesity. 2024. PMID: 38517328) This isn't about quick fixes or masking the underlying challenges. Think of it as clinical scaffolding, a temporary, science-backed tool designed to build early confidence and provide tangible results. This initial boost helps patients overcome physiological hurdles, empowering them to commit to and sustain long-term lifestyle changes. Every metabolic journey is unique, and sometimes, this targeted support is precisely what's needed to truly get started on a path toward lasting health. 🧑🎓 Our advocacy for obesity care respects the intricate science of the body, the individual human experience, and the necessity of integrating diverse strategies to support truly sustainable well-being.

Crucially, opioid-based cough medicines are no longer recommended🚫 for children due to significant risks, including respiratory depression, sedation, and a lack of proven benefit. International guidelines consistently advocate for careful clinical assessment, prioritizing supportive care, such as hydration and honey (for individuals over 1 year), and reserving pharmacological interventions for specific cases, always opting for the safest, evidence-based choices. At Eurodrug Respiratory Summit, June 2025, Valladolid, Spain, We were honored to welcome pulmonologists, allergists, pediatricians, and general practitioners from Colombia, Mexico, and the Dominican Republic to our Respiratory Summit in Valladolid. The summit featured impactful lectures delivered by key opinion leaders (KOLs) in the field of respiratory medicine, covering major topics such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and chronic cough. These sessions were designed to equip healthcare professionals with the latest insights and treatment strategies to enhance patient care.

During EASL Congress 2025 in Amsterdam, we gained valuable insights into the complexity and progression of liver diseases, ranging from early hepatitis to cirrhosis, the sessions shed light on the diverse etiologies including viral, alcoholic, autoimmune hepatitis, MASLD, and cholestatic disorders like PBC and PSC, each contributing uniquely to the decline in patients quality of life. Promising new drugs focusing on FXR, PPAR, and GLP-1R pathways were discussed, along with the growing recognition of antioxidants as supportive agents to reduce oxidative stress and improve treatment outcomes.
