Balancing Bird Safety and Offshore Wind Operations BirdSafe – which stands for Better Integrated Response for Diminishing Strikes in Offshore Wind Flight Environments – is an ambitious research initiative designed to balance bird safety, energy security, and operational costs at sea. 🔬 This autumn, over 70 night-vision cameras are deployed at the Hollandse Kust Zuid (#HKZ) wind farm. Their data, alongside radar data from, among others, Gemini wind park, will give new insights into bird movements through wind farms. We are focusing on critical bird migration periods, particularly for songbirds, when collision risk is at its peak. 📊 The collected data will enhance predictive models of bird flight and collision risk — guiding smarter, practical curtailment strategies that respect ecology, economy, and energy demand. These solutions will be shaped in close collaboration with NGOs, government bodies, TenneT, and wind farm operators.
