🌍 Global shipping to become carbon neutral by 2050, IMO declares It's a high stakes week for global shipping. From Tuesday, the US and China have imposed new tariffs on each other’s cargo vessels. This is an escalation in their trade standoff that could reshape routes and push freight costs higher. Chinese-built ships will now pay an additional $50 per net ton when entering US ports, with rates set to rise annually. China has retaliated with matching levies on US-owned vessels. Analysts warn the measures could disrupt major shipping flows and increase transport costs across supply chains. At the same time, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) is expected to approve its #NetZeroFramework, committing global shipping to become carbon neutral by 2050. The US opposes the plan and has threatened sanctions against countries that support it, yet with more than 100 member states, including China and Greece, representing 95% of global tonnage, adoption appears inevitable.
