Netherlands eScience Center
Onderzoek en wetenschap
Academic research, powered by pioneering software. We’re making sense of digital for science and scholarship.
Over ons
The Netherlands eScience Center is the national center of excellence for the development and application of research software to advance academic research. We are convinced that research in every academic discipline can be improved by taking advantage of available digital technology. We take a multidisciplinary approach, combining our deep knowledge of both academic research and software development to help define and solve research challenges. We share our ideas and the tools we develop. Together with a wide range of partner organizations, we advance not just our research projects, but the state of academic research in general. In 2015 we developed our strategy for the coming years, which you can download here: Netherlands eScience Center Strategy 2015-2020. The eScience Center is a joint initiative of the Dutch national research council (NWO) and the Dutch organisation for ICT in education and research (SURF).

In a pilot workshop this week we taught our new lesson materials about Natural Language Processing for the first time. We are very happy with the positive and constructive feedback we received from our group of participants. Some quotes: 🔹 "You guys did a terrific job ;) Keep innovating as you are doing!" 🔹 "I thought that it was an excellent workshop. The instructors were enthusiastic and able to make the complicated concepts digestible." 🔹 "The work flow with short instruction and exercises is very useful. I think the workshop could be a bit more tailored to specific audiences." We take all the feedback at heart and after some adjustments will be offering the workshop in 2026. We'll keep you posted!

It's been a busy November at the eScience Center! A month filled with seminars, conferences and workshops and the eScience Center was very busy gathering and disseminating knowledge. In our November Roundup we share just a few of the interesting events organised in the research software community. 👉 https://lnkd.in/eRtd9qUu

National Research Software Day 2025 was a great success, thanks to the professional organisation by @TU Delft and NL-RSE and, of course, the funding provided by TU Delft, #LCRDM and @Open Science NL. There was substantial input from the eScience Center, and we took home many insights and much inspiration – not to mention a 2000 euro prize to develop a new training! At the eScience Center we pride ourselves on sharing stories about our work and our projects. We sometimes need a little push to get started, especially when you have a lot of ideas in you head. RSE @pabrod as just the scheme to remove that writers block. https://lnkd.in/e3EnaEYX

National Research Software Day was a succes in itself, but it was an especially memorable day for Fenne Riemslagh: she won the TDCC-NES funding of 2000 euros for starting-up a soft skill training in 2026. We will share more about the details of her plan next year!

Happy to have had informative, lively discussions with another group of software enthusiasts at our Research Software Support Training! Some quotes about what their favourite topic was: 🔸 "The introduction of the software management plan (SMP) tool. I was already wondering if such a thing would be around and this will be helpful in supporting researchers." 🔸 "The thought provoking discussions, and role playing grumpy researchers who do not want to fill in an SMP." 🔸"Difference between research software vs. software used in research. Licensing. Distribution. Version control."
