When natural disasters occur, every second counts. 🕛 That's why Philips Foundation and Philips are teaming up with MedShare to design a forward-thinking, disaster-preparedness model that ensures rapid response and continuity of care during emergencies. Prompted by the critical need highlighted during Hurricane Helene in 2024, this partnership is designed to get life-saving medical equipment and supplies into the hands of communities quickly. Philips Foundation will provide financial aid and strategic guidance, drawing on over a decade of experience in disaster relief. "By working hand-in-hand with Philips and the Philips Foundation, we're not only staging life-saving medical equipment for rapid deployment but also proactively building a more resilient healthcare system for those who are most vulnerable," said Stacey Greene Koehnke, CEO of MedShare. Imagine the challenges of getting a cancer diagnosis for a child in a remote area. 🌏💓 This is a daily reality for many families, which is why Philips Foundation has teamed up with World Child Cancer to help bridge the knowledge gap and improve access to radiology for early childhood cancer detection in Indonesia. Over 10,000 children in Indonesia develop cancer each year, according to Indonesian's Action Plan for Childhood Cancer, but only about 2,000 cases were recorded between 2021 and 2023. This collaboration aims to change that. Our innovative health app will serve as a go-to resource for healthcare providers, parents, and the public, helping to drive earlier diagnosis and treatment. In addition, we're providing training programs for radiologists on childhood cancer detection using e-learning modules and live sessions. "Every child deserves a fair chance at early, accurate cancer diagnosis and equal access to treatment and care," says Welmer Blom, Managing Director at World Child Cancer. "Through this multistakeholder partnership, we are bridging the gap in childhood cancer care in Indonesia, increasing awareness, driving earlier diagnosis and treatment, and improving survival rates." This initiative is a powerful example of how collective action can tackle complex healthcare challenges and improve people's lives. Want to learn more about how we're making a difference? Also remote communities deserve timely and effective emergency care. 🚑💙 On the isolated Italian islands of Procida and the Aeolian Archipelago, cardiac emergencies pose unique challenges, but when executed carefully, data driven initiatives can transform healthcare accessibility. In collaboration with Croce Rossa Italiana (Red Cross Italy), Philips Foundation strategically placed semi-automatic defibrillators (AEDs) across Procida to ensure 24/7 accessibility, raising emergency coverage to 79%, up from just 59%. This initiative enables local communities by training over 450 residents and boosting their ability to respond effectively to cardiac emergencies. By studying data that shows where people live, work, and where emergencies are most likely to happen, with help from the Politecnico di Milano we have identified optimal locations to deploy AEDs. This helps improve emergency response where it's needed the most. Through this data-driven approach, we were able to improve the health infrastructure that promise better healthcare outcomes for nearly 25,000 people on these remote islands. "Thanks to the results obtained through our study, the distribution of semi-automatic defibrillators on the island of Procida is going to significantly improve the safety and health of the public," said Enrico Gianluca Caiani, Professor of Digital Health at Politecnico di Milano. Let's continue making heart safety accessible for everyone. Every child deserves a healthy heart. 🌍❤️ Rheumatic Heart Disease (RHD) might be silently troubling families worldwide, but in places like Uganda, the stakes are especially high. Hundreds of thousands of children are at risk, yet early detection could make a life-changing difference. That's why the Philips Foundation has teamed up with Heart Healers International to conduct a trial on a grand scale, screening over 100,000 children and adolescents using handheld echocardiogram machines. With early intervention, monthly penicillin treatments reduced disease progression from 8.2% to just 0.8% among untreated children – a promising step towards healthier futures. This initiative is focused on saving lives and creating solutions for a national RHD action plan as advised by the World Health Organization. And it's not just Uganda, we're expanding efforts in Asia-Pacific, including the Philippines and Indonesia, to combat RHD with the World Heart Federation. "Rheumatic heart disease is entirely preventable, yet it remains a major cause of death in underserved regions. Early detection, local treatment models, and global collaboration are key to ending this silent epidemic", said Professor Krishna Kumar, Chair of Neglected Cardiac Disease Expert Group at World Heart Organization. Watch this movie from BBC StoryWorks and the World Heart Federation about David, to see why early screening matters. Let's make heart health reachable for everyone. ❤️ Learn more here: https://lnkd.in/gqXjUcjG 📸 © BBC & World Heart Federation #GlobalHealth #HealthForAll #RheumaticHeartDisease

Big ideas are only brilliant if they reach real people. That’s the reality Sabine Bolonhini, CEO of SAS Brasil, sees every day. And it’s exactly why Philips Foundation teamed up with her organisation to bring connected care to remote communities in Brazil. At this year’s World Economic Forum, leaders from Philips, SAS Brasil, UNICEF and Northwell Health came together to talk about what it really takes to tackle non-communicable diseases like heart disease and stroke, which cause over 70% of global deaths in low-and-middle income countries [WHO, 2024]. For Sabine, it comes down to bridging the gap between invention and impact. “The challenge for people who develop innovations is they often don't know how to get to the last-mile delivery,” she said. “The success we’ve had is when we blend that technical knowledge with local insight. And that requires partnership and collaboration.” Through a joint initiative, SAS Brasil and Philips Foundation are bringing ultrasound, ECG tools, and telemedicine to where they’re needed most, while training local professionals to use them. Real change happens when bold ideas meet practical delivery. We’re proud to share the final regional story in our Decade of Impact series! For the past 10 years, Philips Foundation has worked to improve access to healthcare and health outcomes for under-served communities around the world. In Sub-Saharan Africa, we’ve focused on enhancing maternal and child health and addressing the alarming rise of cardiovascular diseases —supporting health systems facing workforce shortages, limited funding, and fragile infrastructure. Here are a few of our initiatives: 🤰High-risk pregnancy toolkit To help bridge gaps in maternal care we partnered with Philips Design and the International Committee of the Red Cross - ICRC to develop a High-Risk Pregnancy toolkit. The toolkit includes easy-to-understand cards that help recognize signs of high-risk pregnancies and promote awareness of healthy and unhealthy behaviors. Distributed across six countries, it has reached 1,800+ birth attendants and helped increase antenatal check-ups among high-risk pregnant women. 👩🏿⚕️Increasing access to ultrasound services In Uganda and Kenya, we’re expanding access to obstetric ultrasound. With partners like Imaging the World Africa and Aga Khan University Hospital, Nairobi, we’ve trained 250+ health workers, equipped facilities, and improved referral systems. These initiatives have contributed to policy development for point-of-care ultrasound in Kenya and provided insights on models for scaling access to obstetric ultrasound. 🫀Improving cardiovascular disease outcomes In Kenya, we’ve trained 250+ health workers, equipped facilities, and improved referral systems. In Siaya County, 6,000+ patients have been screened using mobile ultrasound and ECGs – empowering providers to triage and manage cardiovascular risks quickly and effectively. We’re also investing in social entrepreneurs, such as Healthy Entrepreneurs and GOAL 3, across East Africa who are innovating alongside local health systems to drive lasting impact. As we look ahead to the next decade, we remain committed to innovation, collaboration, and building healthier futures. 👉 Learn more about Philips Foundation’s work and impact in Sub-Saharan Africa: https://lnkd.in/eAjZr6Cx
