🔎 Can free summer events fight social isolation and increase inclusion? This is what our partners over at Bellidée have done, participating in a nationwide initiative: “Quartiers d’été” (summer neighbourhoods). ☀️This program brings neighbourhoods together through free, family-friendly cultural activities. Thanks to the efforts of local social centers, underserved communities are also offered the opportunity to engage in summer festivities! 👉Curious to hear more about this successful initiative? 🎉 Congratulations to our partners at Stad Roeselare for the launch of their citizen assembly on mobility! 🥇 Roeselare is the first city in West Flanders to organize a randomly selected citizen assembly, leading the way for public participation in the region. Learn more about this inspiring initiative below.👇 Interreg North Sea Programme #CitizenAssembly #Mobility #PublicParticipation
How can a city truly give everyone a voice in shaping the future of its city centre? Roeselare is taking an innovative step forward with a citizens’ assembly on mobility. Beyond an online survey and focus groups, the city goes further: 75 residents were randomly selected for a citizens’ panel to make recommendations for Roeselare’s new mobility plan. Why random selection? “With open calls, the same groups tend to respond. A lottery ensures a more diverse and fair reflection of the population — making the outcomes stronger and more widely supported,” the city explains. 🔹 How did they do it? ➡️5,000 residents were randomly drawn from the national register in spring 2025 ➡️Selection considered age, gender, neighbourhood, and nationality ➡️From those who accepted, a second draw selected 75 participants ➡️Diversity in family situation, occupation, mobility habits and disability was also ensured 🔹 What happens next? ➡️Five in-depth sessions will take place in September and October under professional facilitation ➡️Participants will receive information and guidance to develop well-founded recommendations ➡️The final report will help the city council make future decisions about the city centre 👉 A citizens’ assembly is the ultimate way for a city to hear the voice of all its residents — producing thoughtful, inclusive, and lasting recommendations that politics can build on. 💡Can successful citizen assemblies be created with limited resources? Our partners at Malmö stad explored this question by running a cost-efficient Climate Dialogue based on methods developed by the Klimatriksdagen, who gathered all their insights into a practical handbook. From methods and budgeting to barriers and the day-to-day process, the guide includes everything you need to design your own event. 👉 Curious about what goes on behind the scenes of a citizen assembly? 🌍 We’re delighted to officially welcome Agder fylkeskommune (Agder County Council - ACC) as a new partner in the Speak Up project! Located in the southern part of Norway, Agder is home to around 320,000 people and is working towards becoming a socially, environmentally, and economically sustainable region by 2030. ACC brings extensive experience in public participation, co-creation, and sustainable regional planning through its #ourAgder framework. This collaborative model connects citizens, businesses, academia, and government to shape local policies. We look forward to learning from their innovative approaches to citizen engagement and to exchanging ideas that help strengthen inclusive climate deliberation and decision-making. Welcome aboard, Agder County Council! 🇳🇴 Interreg North Sea Programme #GreenTransition #PublicParicipation

♻️ From Old to New in Ramsing, Denmark At Café Forny (Repair Café), it’s all about community, togetherness, and giving things a second life. Hosting a variety of experts, such as electricians, carpenters, and sewists, residents can bring everything from clothes to small electrical appliances and have them repaired —instead of throwing them away. For example, Stine Højland was invited to the café to teach residents how worn textiles can be transformed into new shirts, dresses, or even something completely different. 👉 Watch the video to see how the Climate Village in Skive Kommune works to extend the lifespan of what we already own, making a real difference for the environment! With layered participation, educative and immersive tracks we support and enhance our holistic riverproject #MasterplanBinnendijle Our citizens were able to have a 3D-view on the design of future public space, on rewildering streets and riverbanks. Our projectpartner Thomas More University of Applied Sciences created a visual 3D-experience beyond the classical rendering of 2D designs. Designs appeared in depth, the greening was shown transforming over different seasons. An immersive experience showed the interests of different archetypes. Young people, people in wheelchairs, elderly people, jogging or kayaking people... but also otters, bats, fishes, dameselfies, and plants flourishing in the water or at the banks gave their ten cents on the future of the river. The citizen assembly asked us to give a voice to plants and animals, so we did. Restoring the biodiversive potential of the river, greening the streets and the creation of new public space around it also makes the city more reslilient in climatechange. In this immersive boot participants could experience heat and a refreshing wind. A simple invitation to reflect on the benefitial effects of this adaptationproject. It's a pleasure to create these innovations, together with a fantastic team and project partners, an enthousiastic and open city management and the support of European Urban Initiative and Speak Up - Interreg North Sea Region project. #masterplanBinnendijle #mechelenvanmorgen #participatie European Urban Initiative Speak Up Ranja Van Asbroeck, Mark Van der Veken An Schepers Michiel Van Mele Grete Hellemans anne smits Jolien Damen Shadi Lakishiraz Michiel Van Gucht Guillaume Van Parys
