‘Janneke Bruil is an excellent facilitator. She has prepared and led several workshops in West Africa relating to food sovereignty and agroecology with a particular focus on participatory methods to help participants systematize and document their program experience. Janneke is also an strong networker, skilled in advocacy, researcher and writer. She is versatile, flexible in her approach and always generates a good working atmosphere through her sense of humor, and dynamic facilitation skills. For my work with Groundswell International, she has undertaken joint documentation initiatives in Ghana, Burkina Faso, and Senegal, in both English and French. Janneke has also worked with my colleagues in Ecuador and speaks Spanish fluently. She is skilled in inter-cultural communication. Janneke is a good at forging healthy working relationships and working within a team. She takes initiative, and is a critical thinker. I recommend Janneke most highly. She would be a great asset to any organization who engages her. Peter Gubbels (Director for Action Learning and Advocacy, (West Africa) Groundswell International ’

The 250 Thousand Families Challenge: Bringing to bear food practice on health, equity and sustainability in Ecuador
FAO
In Ecuador thousands of families have joined a campaign that promotes fresh, agroecological food produced by family farmers. Most of these foods are from native crops and are sold directly to consumers at outdoor markets and food fairs. These rural and urban families strengthen local cultures and economies as well as social organization. Based in their daily need to eat, they generate new value in food, for example by working with chefs who promote new flavors and plates tied to Andean cuisine.…

These rural and urban families strengthen local cultures and economies as well as social organization. Based in their daily need to eat, they generate new value in food, for example by working with chefs who promote new flavors and plates tied to Andean cuisine. The public creates support for agroecology as it organizes around the advantages of “eating well” – i.e., utilizing food as a means for health, sustainability and social equity. The campaign’s motto is: We are 250,000 families who eat healthy, delicious food from our land.

Learning from farmer-led access and benefit sharing of plant genetic resources
Bioversity International and ILEIA
This article is the conclusion of a bundle (edited by the three co-authors of the article) which explored the ways in which access and benefit sharing of plant genetic resources can work for family farmers. On one hand it presents cases that demonstrate the limited extent to which family farmers have been able to benefit from the ‘formal’ ABS process: the rather complex arrangements between international agreements and national authorities, institutions and communities. On the other hand, this…

On one hand it presents cases that demonstrate the limited extent to which family farmers have been able to benefit from the ‘formal’ ABS process: the rather complex arrangements between international agreements and national authorities, institutions and communities. On the other hand, this publication uncovers some of the effective principles and mechanisms for access and benefit sharing that are part and parcel of farmers’ everyday practices, even when formal ABS regulations have not yet been designed or implemented. What can we conclude?

Agroecology Learning Exchange
ILEIA
This report brings together the insights from a landmark meeting centred on the question of how to amplify agroecology. Over 70 individuals shared the fruit from decades of hard field work, research and activism on the amplification of agroecology and identified key lessons from their work. The four day Agroecology Learning Exchange, which the co-author and myself also facilitated, took place in Uganda and was organised by the AgroEcology Fund and the Alliance for Food Sovereignty in Africa in…

Lessons in supporting family farming. Stories from Swaziland
ILEIA and IFAD
Many rural development initiatives attempt to improve the lives of family farmers. Some succeed, some fail – but all of them can offer valuable lessons for the future. In a two-phased documentation workshop, farmers, field workers and other experts working in IFAD-funded projects in Swaziland described, analysed and wrote down some of their most promising experiences. This booklet presents the results from the documentation process in Swaziland and is accompanied by a series of short films.
