What does it take to transform a nation’s scientific landscape? Sometimes, it begins with a few extraordinary individuals — and the power of institutions willing to lead change. The Elsevier Foundation and RIKEN have launched a new report, "Envisioning Futures: Women’s Leadership and Gender Equity in Japanese Research", shining a light on the journeys, achievements, and challenges of women research leaders in #Japan. 🔬 While Japan remains a global leader in innovation, women still make up only 18.5% of the research workforce — and even fewer hold senior positions. This report brings their voices to the forefront, combining national data with personal stories from nine accomplished women principal investigators. Their insights reveal what it takes to lead, adapt, and redefine success in science — from building inclusive lab cultures and mentoring the next generation to challenging long-standing norms about career paths and excellence. 💡 The message is clear: equity in research isn’t just a women’s issue, it’s a shared responsibility for change. Read the full report and be part of the movement toward a more inclusive, innovative, and equitable future for science in Japan — and beyond. 👉 Download the report here: https://lnkd.in/driB74S2 #WomenInSTEM #ResearchLeadership #Innovation

In Japanese research, women make up just 18.5% of the workforce – but their impact goes far beyond numbers. 👩🔬 At a special event held at the NLExpo2025 - Netherlands participation at Expo 2025 Osaka Kansai Pavilion last week, we launched our newest "Envisioning Futures", in collaboration with our partner RIKEN. During discussion, moderated by Mia Yamakawa Lewis, RIKEN leaders Dr. Yoshie Otake and Dr. Reiko Mazuka, along with Dr. Yoko Shimpuku (Hiroshima University) and our Partnerships Director Domiziana Francescon, shared the opportunities and challenges of female leadership. "Envisioning Futures" highlights personal stories from women leaders who are redefining success, building inclusive labs and overcoming barriers – and complements it with national data to explore resilience, mentorship and ways institutions can drive equity for all. Discover practical recommendations and insights for institutions, policymakers and aspiring scientists 👉 https://lnkd.in/driB74S2
