It’s #AskAConservator Day! Preserving Munch’s masterpieces — the unseen work behind the scenes. Our conservation team plays a vital role in preserving his works for future generations. Edvard Munch’s sometimes untraditional use of materials and experimental techniques give his pictures a completely unique appearance. They also pose a number of challenges for the Museum’s Conservation Department. We care for an incredible collection of 1,128 paintings and 25,000 prints and drawings by Edvard Munch. From cleaning and delicate retouching to travelling with artworks to ensure their safety. MUNCH has a well-equipped Conservation Department, in which paintings conservators, paper conservators, art technicians and museum scientists work to care for, and conduct research into, Munch’s art. There is great interest in exhibiting Munch’s art, and some paintings are out on loan almost continually. Tomorrow opens our exhibition, Ludvig Karsten, Restless. The Norwegian artist Ludvig Karsten (1876–1926) was a restless force in modern art — both in life and on the canvas. A brief pupil of Henri Matisse, Karsten forged his own energetic path through expressive brushwork and bold experimentation. ✨ MUNCH Award 2025 Recipient: Samia Halaby ✨   We are proud to announce that Palestinian artist, educator, scholar, and activist Samia Halaby is the second recipient of the MUNCH Award. Born in Jerusalem in 1936 and now based in the USA, Halaby is predominantly known as a painter, but her multifaceted practice has also been central to the development of digital art. She has demonstrated a long-term commitment to protesting injustices related to class, gender and race. The plight of Palestine has remained central to her activism and her scholarship.   📍Halaby will be honoured with a ceremony at MUNCH in Oslo on 24 October.   The MUNCH Award, established in 2024, honours artistic freedom of expression and recognises artists who have distinguished themselves with courage and integrity throughout their career.    🔗 Full video in our bio.     #MUNCH #MUNCHmuseum #MUNCHaward
