Waste management contracts today are where mobile subscriptions were 10+ years ago. Just like how we used to pay for each minute of call time and for each text message, waste mgmt. customers pay for each container deployment, pickup, and for the tonnage. But this leads to highly inefficient transportation, where huge trucks aren't used to their full capacity. Any route optimization is inherently limited by when the customer placed an order and expects their container to be picked up. The surprising finding is that many customers are quite flexible about when containers are picked up, as long as they get the best price for their waste management. Our estimates show 30-50% efficiency gains in transportation planning, but only if the waste company creates flexibility for when to pickup containers. By switching over to subscription contracts, where customers pay for container capacity and don't have to worry about placing pickup orders, waste companies can create this flexibility. At the same time, customers get better experiences. Or do you miss the good old times of "pay per text message"? It's inspiring to work with forward-leaning companies like Ragn-Sells on building the future of waste management!

  • SELF-AWARE WASTE CONTAINERS - would be an absolute nightmare. Sensors that can tell what type & quality waste (ahem, resources) is in a container, however - that would be pretty great. With that information, waste management companies could greatly improve their operations, leading to way less waste going to, well, waste.  Instead, more would be turned into new, high-quality materials. That’s the future we’re working hard to make happen, and it’s the future we need - today 62% of all waste in Europe is incinerated, and that’s just not sustainable. We are working on this problem along with the great people at Ragn-Sells AS, NORSUS and Norsk Regnesentral, as part of the research-project "ReWaCC - Remote Waste Characterization and Quality”, with funding from Norges forskningsråd. We believe we can make this technology a reality. Will we succeed? Stay tuned to find out.

  • WE WERE IN DESPERATE NEED OF CONTENT FOR LINKEDIN - so we took a trip to one of those cabins by that closed down ski-resort near Drammen that every company/bachelor party in eastern Norway goes to. In all seriousness: These lovely photos are from our recent quarterly off-site which, yes, did take place at one of those cabins by that closed down ski-resort near Drammen that every company/bachelor party in eastern Norway goes to. We had a grand ol' time - making big plans for the future, cooking and getting to know each other a bit better. The timing was good, as with the recent addition of (among others!) the incredibly talented Christoffer Lange, Sharanan Kulam, Ahmet Pala and Ivan Grujic, our team is now "set" for a while. Last year we were 5.5 people - now we're 13. The growth has been incredible and, luckily, we aren't superstitious - we believe the future will be no different. Full steam ahead!

What do you do when you want to collect data during the Norwegian winter, but you don't want to stand around outside for 2 freezing weeks? (Not that our sensors couldn't have handled it - it's our fingers we were worried about.) You borrow a mine from one of your partner companies! Thanks a lot Franzefoss AS. Oslo-based trashtech startup Sensorita uses intelligent, data-driven sensors to accurately measure waste levels in open skips and large containers. By providing real-time data on location, fill levels, and waste quality, this solution aims to reduce contamination and make collection more efficient during the recycling process. How exactly does it work, and what effect could it have on our recycling systems?
