The International Energy Agency (IEA) new report on #CleanCooking in #Africa is out today. Almost 1.5 billion people in Asia and Latin America have gained access to clean cooking since 2010, an achievement that needs to be repeated. Sub-Saharan Africa is the region most at risk of being left behind - with a billion people lacking clean cooking today (4 out of 5 households). Our new analysis based on best historical achievements shows that all countries in Africa can achieve universal access by 2040. This has huge implications for the continent’s development, for health, education, employment, and the environment.                                                                                         Key messages to take away: 🔹 Achieving access to clean cooking in Africa costs USD 2 billion on average per year until 2040, less than 0.1% of global energy investment today. 🔹 Reaching universal access in Africa by 2040 would prevent 4.7 million premature deaths, 🔹 It will halve the time households spend gathering fuels and cooking, freeing up time equivalent of working hours of Brazil – a huge economic opportunity 🔹 It will create 460,000 new permanent jobs – as large as the employment in utilities in Africa today 🔹 It would also reduce greenhouse gases by around 550 Mt CO2-eq , saving forest area roughly the size of Ecuador. 🔹 We see continued momentum from the 2024 IEA's Clean Cooking Summit. More than 20% of the USD 2.2 billion committed at the Summit have been disbursed. 🌳 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲: 𝗘𝘀𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗮𝗹, 𝗡𝗼𝘁 𝗢𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗖𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗔𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 🌊 In the climate emergency, we need every tool at our disposal. Science is clear: a portfolio approach—deep emissions cuts, accelerating removals, and scaling finance to all credible solutions—is our safest path to net zero. Nature-based solutions and high-integrity market mechanisms are not silver bullets, but they are proven, ready, and improving every day. Demand for only "permanent" carbon solutions based on technology creates a false choice and would sideline vital, immediate tools we have now—locking in greater climate risk and delaying action with irreversible consequences. Nature has stored and recycled carbon safely for millions of years, and can do so again. Importantly, nature-based solutions also help communities adapt, safeguard water, support biodiversity, and build more resilient landscapes—all while supporting jobs and equity. Science, tools, and standards are evolving fast to strengthen these benefits and manage reversal risks. What we need now is policy and finance to catch up. We need leadership that puts nature at the heart of climate strategy, together with all other feasible, safe and proven options, and supports the scaling of solutions that are ready now. We can’t afford to rule out the solutions that nature offers us, at exactly the moment we need them most. Investments in the EU + UK economy in adaptation are accelerating at a much faster rate than economies are growing. However, it is not even across geographies or sectors. There is underinvestment relative to shares of GDP in Manufacturing, Wholesale and Retail Trade, Construction, Transport and Health. And the Netherlands, Greece, Croatia and Italy are all spending higher proportions of their total economy, compared to Ireland and Luxembourg, who are at the lower end. There are also interesting cases of underinvestment, like Minining and Quarrying (highadaptation costs, but relatively low economic contributions) and Tourism. It also finds that public spending has a crowding in effect - that every € of public funds spent on adaptation leverages an extra 0,28c of private adaptation. The transition to cheap renewable energy services in low- and middle-income countries is increasingly threatened by the impacts of climate change. https://lnkd.in/dcAn3QAc In this new article in Nature Energy, we argue that climate-related failures of energy networks initiate a ‘vicious circle’ in which services become so unreliable that energy users stop using (and paying for) the system – often opting for more expensive and more polluting alternatives – whilst climate risks and costly repairs drive up the cost of capital for new investment. Breaking that vicious circle involves building in resilience during energy system planning and an ongoing commitment to asset management throughout the life of a system. In the Environmental Change Institute (ECI), University of Oxford we are developing datasets and tools in FCDO's Climate Compatible Growth #CCG programme to make this happen.
