The @Fonds de recherche du Québec (FRQ) has announced the creation of seven research chairs in science diplomacy, with expertise on crucial, future-focused cross-border issues. These stretch from Global Governance of #AI to Fishery Stock Dynamics to Indigenous Science Diplomacy. It is not every day you see 60+ ministers and high-level representatives gathering to tackle one of today's paradoxes: geopolitical tensions are fragmenting scientific cooperation precisely when unified action on climate change, pandemics, and emerging technologies is most urgent. This happened at the UNESCO Global Ministerial Dialogue on Science Diplomacy in March! 🤝 With my freind and colleague Kimberly Montgomery from AAAS we have a joint letter in this week’s issue of Science, responding to an interesting recent OpEd from Peter Gluckman and Vaughan Turekian. 🌍 In the letter we argue that science diplomacy is a tool rather than an end in itself, and that advocating for different modalities of science diplomacy risk assigning values to the practice rather than seeing it as a mechanism of statecraft which can be used for good or ill* 🌐 We also agree with Vaughan and Peter on the need for frameworks, and highlight some of the recent work published this year form colleagues like Jan Marco Müller and Jean-Christophe Mauduit for the European Commission, Marga Gual Soler, PhD for GESDA - Geneva Science and Diplomacy Anticipator, and our own report from the The Royal Society and AAAS. 🎓 It’s been a fascinating year for published work on science diplomacy. And while we may hold different views on how we describe the practice. We can all agree that global challenges we face today demands the effective comming together of the scientific and diplomatic worlds. *your perspective on what is good or ill may also vary
