Carbon credit offtake agreements can learn from the renewable energy purchasing playbook. Similar to a wind or solar farm, many carbon projects have high upfront costs and a long payback period. That time lag between capital outlay and returns introduces uncertainty and makes early-stage investment risky. Upfront commitments to purchase a product upon delivery (offtakes) derisk that early project uncertainty, guaranteeing future revenue. And that certainty gives investors the confidence to come in and provide the early-stage capital necessary to get projects off the ground. I wrote a little more about lessons learned from the last two decades of renewable energy purchasing, and how they can apply to carbon offtakes, looking at a recent offtake between Climate Impact Partners and Microsoft, with investment from Terra Natural Capital. Australia’s climate targets won’t be met with headlines alone — they depend on real action, and real trees in the ground. 🌱 You can’t offset emissions with press releases, or sequester carbon with good intentions (if only it were that easy…). What actually counts? Working with landowners and farmers to put trees in the right places, optimising landscapes for carbon, timber, and agriculture — and proving that forestry and farming aren’t on opposite teams. To do this at scale, we also need financial models that unlock capital and encourage Australian institutional investors — including superannuation funds — to invest in landscapes that deliver both returns and climate impact.
