Knee jerk hot takes from the #xerocon Keynotes - Celebrated 17 years of Xero in Australia and a thank you to Australian accountants for " running the world" - 8,000 people registered online to watch, finally challenger to the ChangeGPS webinars!! - The gold jacket maybe a message to shareholders who knocked down the remuneration recommendation - she's worth it! Reminds me of former CEO Steve Vamos sporting the leather jacket and coming onto AC/DC. Sukhinder chose KPOP Demon hunters - probably the best way to get kids into accounting. - AI is changing client and accountant expectations. hard to argue with this but I never like these general statements. COVID probably the biggest expectation change I've seen because firms over serviced clients ..and surprise surprise..clients loved it. - "technology is nothing if it can't deliver value for customers" damn straight. - A big attempt to remind accountants that we are the leaders others need to follow. Accountants lead the cloud adoption in apac...but I don't think we'll lead AI. it's penetrated so much of the market already Onto CPO Diya Jolly's Keynote The Xero vision is " the most trusted and insightful platform for small business and advisors" A deeply embedded ecosystem experience was a key ask from customers. Almost hinted firms are frustrated with the amount of apps they need to login, and recognise accountants use more than just xero. Supports my view that we are returning to the dream of the suite. Accountants often miss the new features released because we're so busy. Great that Diya is creating awareness for new things many aren't using yet. Innovation is adoption for accountants. righto....big JAX expectations now they want to automate 90% or routine tasks, Personally, I thought Xero already had AI bank recs. As the accountant next to me said " I need to check it" -From just ask to just done. This feels like a pitch to turn it into agents - the future is not about more software but less..one intelligent platform that doesn't help do the work, it does it for you. - I did not like the AI advice at all. it asked if the client could afford a new van. The AI looked at the cash balance and said yes. Good luck getting those ATO debts paid! This feels like an overstretch AI use case for me and I would not want my clients getting advice from this and bypassing me. - Now we're reimagining accounting through AI Automated actions will give control and oversight. TASA rules will require this and it's great to see it considered. New features... I love a customisable dashboard. I'm a fan of business on a page info sharing. Tax manger looks great to manage due dates. Big round of applause for Workpapers with BGL. I reckon firms will still need the ChangeGPS workpapers to do the work, not just manage it for now. OpenAI integrated into JAX is great. Good Thing our members have had it in Evo for months! How'd I go? What did you think?

Digitisation thought for the week 22/08/25: The weakest link in digitisation is physical Insights require data, data require things to go right where it's generated. At Kallipr we often discuss the difference in project delivery methodology for hardware (including firmware) and software. Waterfall serves you best in hardware, agile best in software. I think this is crux of the matter as to why most hardware companies suck at software and vice versa. The importance of meticulously planned hardware, tested and retested can’t be understated and it becomes especially true when deploying in the extremes. Knowing your operating environment and communicating that to your solutions engineer and partners will set you up for success. A tight coupling between the operations- and digital side of the business ensures that tenders contain the specifications that can survive the environment the data sources have to live in. The viability of a new tender the specification typically gives away whether this coupling exists. A recent tender asked for IP67 (< 30min submersion) devices in a sewer, in a place that is often in the news for flooding. This tender is destined for failure because the focus was only on the digital not the physical. Consider these physical physical factors for your initiative to succeed: ·      Temperature – There are many thermodynamic effects. Ground level, is warmer than head level. Metal can easily exceed 60C or 140 F. The inverse is true for cold too. ·      Submersion – Unqualified IP68 means nothing. An IP68 rating is achieved by submerging for longer than 30min in 1.5m deep water. Your warranty may be void at 31min if unqualified. ·      Corrosion- If you’re in a corrosive environment you’ll need to plan for it and protect the device against it. ·      Explosiveness- If you’re deploying in an environment that could be explosive, an assessment of the risk is a prudent first step. Roughly 5-10% of all sewers requires formal ATEX certified product, whilst an ATEX rated product can provide additional peace of mind for the balance. ·      Animals -I could write a thesis on this, but as a humorous example watch this video on the  Cockatoo or  The Bogans (rednecks) of the sky as they’re called  https://lnkd.in/gvqznijq ·      People- Some days the animals are a bit better. Vandalism and theft needs to be taken into account and designed for, especially on the installation. ·      Other- UV, Flammability, Pressure, Humidity, Condensation, Thunderstrikes and ESD can all affect how your data source plays it role. Successful projects understands the foundational importance of ensuring the data source survives. If software is digitisation’s Youtube, hardware is the content. Companies like Netflix and Prime Video have figured out for consistent quality you need both and dare I say perhaps the foundational content is more important. I’ll touch on the importance of firmware and firmware upgrades next.

🎯2025 InternetNZ survey: “68% of New Zealanders are worried about the potential malicious use of AI and the lack of regulation surrounding it” Innovation and Regulation are not opposites. Well-designed regulation provides guardrails that give everyone more confidence to innovate safely. 🎯2025 University of Melbourne survey: “Only 44% of New Zealanders believe the benefits of AI outweigh the risks.” I've talked to a lot of people in recent months about how their organisations are adopting AI - many feel like they have to figure out where the safeguards are themselves in the absence of a national approach. Nobody wants to get it wrong. 🎯2025 KPMG survey: "Only 34% of New Zealanders are excited about AI, while 60% are worried" Because even if you don't have government regulation, you still have customers and users who care about how AI is used. And they may not be that forgiving when it's pushed too far. ➡️ This is why I've signed the open letter at https://regulateai.nz/ [in a personal capacity]. I'm quite pro-technology, I just want it to be used safely. Unfortunately, we are already seeing many harms arise from the poor use of artificial intelligence - poor because people are using AI in harmful ways, and poor because the technology itself still has a long way to go. Some people feel like they are alone in a sea of hype, that everyone is pushing for more AI while they feel uncomfortable about where things are going. The survey data shows they are not alone - about half the country is wary of where the technology is taking us. It serves all of us to be thinking about how regulation can help us manage the risks arising from AI, so that we can all safely see the benefits of this technology into the future.
