Fundamental rights in law enforcement are not just legal obligations. They define who we are. At Europol’s Fundamental Rights Conference today, I spoke about the duty of leadership: not just setting rules, but shaping a culture. That is not a matter of flipping a switch. Changing a culture is not a smooth ride. Sometimes it’s even more like an uphill battle. It’s more about encouraging, supporting and cultivating than about managing. Leading by example and at the same time acknowledging that nobody is perfect. At least I know for sure I’m not. A professional law enforcement officer must be more than effective. We must be legitimate in the eyes of the people we serve. Next to culture and leadership, this also requires training and oversight that upholds integrity at every level. The path ahead is clear: we will continue to train, build, and lead a law enforcement culture that stands for both security and dignity. The people of Europe expect nothing less. And they shouldn’t.

On Thursday, we had the pleasure of welcoming 26 young people from Austria to the Frontex headquarters in Warsaw. During their visit, we introduced them to our Agency’s work and engaged in open, fact-based discussions on migration and EU-wide border protection. Under the motto ‘’Let’s talk about it’’ – by poledu.at -, the aim was to encourage independent thinking and challenge echo chambers by fostering meaningful dialogue. PolEdu is a non-partisan platform committed to the political education of young people through events, workshops and study visits.💡 We were truly impressed by their curiosity, openness to new perspectives, and willingness to ask thought-provoking questions. 💡 👏 💪 Events like these are essential for us to promote transparency and constructive discussion. A big thank you to everyone who participated and contributed to this insightful exchange! 🙌

Executive director Frontex (European Border and Coast Guard Agency)

Last week’s meeting of EU interior ministers and other officials in Warsaw also provided an opportunity for me to meet and host a number of them at our headquarters. I also spoke to a number of ministers at the meeting hosted by the Polish presidency of the Council of the EU. Yes, there were many handshakes and small talk. But more importantly, these discussions reinforced our shared commitment to securing Europe’s borders. Frontex continues to grow as a key partner in European integrated border management, working hand in hand with national authorities. Border security isn’t just about enforcement—it’s about balancing priorities. Protecting Europe while respecting fundamental rights is a duty we take seriously. That’s why I was pleased to also welcome the Executive Director of the Fundamental Rights Agency. Frontex and FRA share a unique partnership, ensuring security never comes at the cost of dignity. For example, FRA played an important role in helping us develop the role of a Frontex Fundamental Rights Monitor.

🧾 Already 76 years have passed since the Universal Declaration of Human Rights was adopted.   At #Frontex we celebrated this anniversary with a Fundamental Rights Office Open Day. It was a great opportunity to exchange ideas and to discuss the role of fundamental rights in border management with our colleagues.  🙌 A big thank you to everyone who participated in this event - this will enable us to work even better.
