🐶Don’t let her soft eyes mislead you. Tazada is not just a friendly dog; she is a professional. At Gradina Border Crossing, Tazada, a 10-year-old labrador retriever and Sebastian, her dedicated Frontex Dog Handler, they detected a suspicious smell coming from a car and prompted the Serbian authorities, who conducted a thorough search and uncovered a significant quantity of marijuana.  Once again showcasing the critical role of K9 teams in border security.  🇷🇸🤝🇪🇺 What makes this story even more meaningful is that both Tazada and Sebastian are set to retire at the end of the year. Frontex and the Bulgarian Border Police have just completed a major pilot project testing how drones can support real-time border surveillance. The project brought together advanced unmanned systems, mobile control centres and live data sharing to strengthen situational awareness in the field. This was not a lab exercise. The drones were deployed in real operational conditions, supporting border officers on the ground. With no reliance on fixed infrastructure, the systems proved highly mobile and adaptable. Surveillance footage, thermal imagery and drone data were integrated into one common picture and securely shared where it was needed most. This pilot is part of a broader effort to make EU border management smarter, faster and more flexible. It often starts with the offer of a job, a better life or a fresh start. But behind that promise, there’s danger. Most victims don’t even realise what’s happening until it’s too late. On the World Day Against Trafficking in Persons, let’s take a moment to raise awareness. Always double check offers that seem too good to be true, trust your instincts and know that you can turn to the authorities for help.  At Frontex, we work with partners across Europe to stop human trafficking before it happens. Together, we focus on prevention, early detection and protecting those most at risk. Just earlier this month, we joined Romanian authorities at airports to spot signs of human trafficking. Over 100 travellers were checked, leading to the identification of suspected traffickers and several people who may have been at risk.  More than 700 children were also carefully verified to make sure they were travelling safely and legally. We’re grateful to all the organisations and civil society groups who stood with us to protect people and raise awareness. Together, we helped more travellers spot the warning signs and stay safe. Last week, I was in Prague for the opening of our new Frontex Contingent (Contingent 6, if you’re keeping count). It's one of several already in place across Europe, and each time we open one, I see the same thing: we are bringing the job closer to where it happens. I remember when I was at the Royal Marechaussee how decisions felt when they came from far away, and how different it was when leadership stood beside you. That lesson has stayed with me. It is part of why we are building Frontex this way now: responsive and grounded. Each one of our contingents brings together coordination, planning and leadership for a group of countries in one place. This is how we make Frontex more present in the field. It is how we give Member States the support they need, not in theory but in practice. How we are a reliable partner for them. This new Contingent in Prague will support ten countries in Central and Western Europe. It will allow our officers and national partners to work with a Frontex that listens, adapts, and acts without delay. It was good to see our officers at the ceremony and talk with them. Focused. Professional. Ready. You can feel the pride they carry in the work they do. Seeing them in person reminds me what this is all about. Frontex starts with the people on the ground.
