What is 6G, and why does it matter? Last June, in Prague, the 3GPP TSG RAN meeting (#108) took an important step toward answering it by approving the 1st study item on 6GR. This marks the formal beginning of 6G global standardization and what future connectivity will look like. The goal is to define a unified, extensible, and energy-efficient framework that supports both current and emerging use cases (AI/ML, sensing, NTN, etc.). What’s new? The study will explore a single, stand-alone 6G framework designed to: ·        Deliver higher spectral and energy efficiency; ·        Extend coverage (including uplink and edge); ·        Support wider bandwidths (≥200 MHz) exploiting the emerging FR3 mid-band (~7 GHz) and frequencies up to 52.6 GHz, covering FR1, FR3, and FR2-1 (24.25–52.6 GHz). Higher frequencies are excluded at this stage. ·        Enable AI-native, sensing-integrated, and NTN-compatible architectures; ·        Simplify system complexity while remaining forward-compatible for future devices and services. Why it matters? 6G will not be just about faster networks , it’s designing an intelligent, adaptive, and energy-efficient communication fabric that will power innovative services, from any kind of automation to immersive experiences and global IoT. As the study progresses, specific choices made on waveform, architecture, migration paths, and AI/ML integration will define how regions like Europe can position themselves in the standards race. And as technology moves ahead, we must think about its societal implications, from inclusion and sustainability to security and trust, to ensure that 6G truly serves people. Key strategic Implications to consider: 1. Architectural Cohesion The move to a single, stand-alone framework represents a deliberate break from the 5G NR legacy, allowing radical simplification and performance optimization. This foundational shift defines the DNA of 6G’s architecture. 2. Technological Differentiation Physical layer evolution (waveform, coding, MIMO) and energy/spectral efficiency targets will define the competitive game among vendors and regions. Performance metrics will become the basis for future spectrum policy and device design. 3. Orchestration and Operational Intelligence Embedding AI/ML natively and designing for sensing and data-centric services mark a shift from pure connectivity (as in 5G) to context-aware and adaptive networks, central to 6G’s strategic value proposition. 4. Ecosystem Transition Simplified RF/test frameworks and well-defined migration paths will secure investment continuity while promoting innovation in open architectures. 5. Business Value & Vertical Integration By harmonizing TN-NTN and embedding AI, sensing and computing, 6G will become a cross-domain enabler (automotive, logistics, health, defense, etc.) to enhance Europe’s industrial competitiveness.
