The CULTURAL INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY RIGHTS INITIATIVE® (CIPRI) is designed to be a worldwide movement supporting the recognition of cultural IP rights© for craftsmen and women who are the custodians and transmitters of traditional garments, traditional designs and traditional manufacturing techniques. This initiative was born from the need to eliminate culturally appropriative behavior in the fashion industry and aims to act as mediator between the interests of fashion businesses and those of artisans and traditional creative communities. The Cultural IP Rights Initiative supports cultural sustainability and fashion as a form of education and promotion of cultural heritage and traditional cultural expressions.

Last week in Bucharest, during Romanian Creative Week I was invited to speak about cultural Intellectual Property Rights® (CIPR) as human rights belonging to Indigenous Peoples, Ethnic Groups, and Local Communities worldwide—rights grounded in the legal recognition of care and collective custodianship over Biocultural Heritage, Traditional Knowledge (TK) systems, and Traditional Cultural Expressions (TCEs). As biocultural heritage and the creative economy increasingly intersect, this conference created space for deep, necessary reflection on how we can: • Distinguish between conventional intellectual property (IP) and cultural intellectual property (CIP) as a sui-generis legal protection system • Design ethical collaboration frameworks with custodians of Traditional Knowledge and Traditional Cultural Expressions based on the 3C Rule Consent.
