  • What does it mean to be built to last? In these turbulent times, resilient, adaptable and sustainable business models and modes of governance have proven more valuable than ever. At MU, we are proud to have a set-up just like that. In fact, it even forms a cornerstone of our Employee Value Proposition (EVP) that we call Built to Last. But what does this actually mean, and why does it matter to us who work at MU? Our Partner Teemu Tiainen was interviewed for a recent article in Talouselämä, Finland’s leading business magazine, which explored why most communications and HR executives in large companies in Finland are women - and why these roles rarely lead to broader leadership positions. Teemu was asked to share the perspective of an executive search consultant. Here are some of the key takeaways. 🔹 “In Finnish discussions, HR and communications executive roles are often downplayed, despite their strategic importance and cross-cutting influence throughout the organisation.” 🔹 He also addressed one of the pitfalls in executive recruitment: stereotypes. "Hiring managers often have stereotypical ideas about what kind of background and skills people should have for each role." He emphasizes that the executive search company offers diverse candidates for all leadership roles, including representatives of different genders, and challenges companies to consider less typical solutions in recruitment. 🔹 According to MU's international data, the majority of women in human resources executive roles in Finland align with the global trend, whereas the predominance of women in communications executive roles is a Finnish exception at 92%. "In the processes we have been globally involved in, 75% of those selected for executive roles in human resources have been women. In communication and PR executive roles, the proportions are 50-50," - Teemu says. 🔹 "Education and previous job roles too often define what a person can do next, even though capabilities are what truly matter. Yes, a engineer can become an HR director, and a humanist can become a CEO," - Teemu says.
