First six months 2025: Investments today – for a fossil-free future Electricity prices in the Nordic region fell during the first half of 2025 and Vattenfall’s total electricity generation declined. Despite this, Vattenfall reports an improved underlying operating profit. Contributing to the improvement in earnings were more favourable effects from price hedging on the continent and improved results from both trading and distribution operations. During the quarter, we took an investment decision that enables increased capacity at the Harsprånget hydro power plant in Sweden and obtained several permits for the Muir Mhòr wind farm off the east coast of Scotland. Liquid Wind receives SEK 39 million funding to advance eFuel project in Sweden Liquid Wind has secured SEK 39 million in funding from #Industriklivet, the Swedish Energy Agency’s program supporting the green transition in industry. The grant will support the pre-engineering phase of the company’s full-scale eMethanol facility in Örnsköldsvik, Sweden, paving the way for a future investment decision on the eFuel plant. The planned facility will produce 100,000 tons of eMethanol per year by combining green hydrogen from electrolysis with 150,000 tons of captured biogenic CO₂ from Övik Energi AB’s biofuel-powered CHP plant. This integrated approach is expected to avoid 200,000 tons of CO₂ emissions annually, providing a sustainable alternative to fossil fuels in hard-to-abate sectors such as shipping, aviation, and the chemical industry. Claes Fredriksson, CEO and founder of Liquid Wind, says the funding represents a strong commitment from the Swedish government and signals confidence to international investors and offtakers. “It is a clear endorsement of our vision to scale local and resilient eFuel solutions in Europe,” he explains. With this project, Örnsköldsvik is set to strengthen its role as a frontrunner in Sweden’s green energy transition while Liquid Wind moves closer to delivering large-scale, low-carbon solutions for transport and industrial sectors.

We’re excited to be part of a groundbreaking initiative led by Finnish technology company Liquid Sun Ltd, which is launching a globally unique pilot to produce synthetic sustainable aviation fuel (eSAF) from biogenic CO₂ emissions and renewable hydrogen. This pilot, in co-operation with Liquid Sun, ABB, Fortum and Finavia, is an important step towards establishing a functioning value chain for synthetic fuel production in Finland – and supporting the goals of the EU’s eSAF blending mandate. Renewables like solar and wind are weather-dependent, bringing intermittency into the grid. For them to be reliable, the energy system needs to be flexible. Good news: Norrsken House Stockholm alumni John Diklev figured it out, and founded Flower back in 2020.
