18 senior officials from 10 Pacific Island Forum (PIF) member states attended the second instalment of the "Towards Climate Resilience & Urban Sustainability" programme, under the Singapore-Pacific Resilience and Knowledge Sharing (SPARKS) initiative. This module focused on key priorities identified by participants such as coastal protection, inland flood management and water resource resilience, and guided them into developing robust, practical strategies to address pressing urban challenges. Set up in 2008 by the Ministry of National Development and the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources, the Centre for Liveable Cities (CLC) has as its mission “to distil, create and share knowledge on liveable and sustainable cities”. CLC’s work spans three main areas – Research, Capability Development & Advisory, and Knowledge Platforms. Through these activities, CLC hopes to provide urban leaders and practitioners with the knowledge and support needed to make our cities better.

Melvyn Ong, Permanent Secretary (Development), Ministry of National Development, participated in a panel session at EXPO REAL (Messe München) 2025 in Munich. CLC’s Executive Fellow, Michael Koh, was in Vancouver this week to speak at the WRLDCTY Global Forum. The session “Tale of Two Cities: Meeting Challenges at Scale” featured a candid exchange between Singapore and the City of Vancouver to explore various approaches cities can take to "meet the moment" and address challenges at scale, setting a city up for its future generations. We are excited to welcome WRLDCTY to the 10th edition of the World Cities Summit from 14 - 16 June 2026 in Singapore. CLC participated in the Metropolis, World Association of the Major Metropolises 40th Anniversary World Congress, in Seoul, from 29 September to 1 October. CLC joined Metropolis as an Associate Member in September this year. Our Executive Director Hugh Lim spoke at the Megacities Dialogue on the theme of “Inclusive Cities”, sharing Singapore’s perspectives on the importance of access to affordable housing, greenery and sustainable transport, as well as Singapore’s preparations for an ageing population. CLC also attended two other events in Seoul with Director for Research Dr Limin Hee at Metropolis’ Global Cities Foresight Workshop on 29 and 30 September; and researcher Geraldyne How sharing Singapore and global perspectives on Central Business Districts at the 9th Megacity Think Tank Alliance (MeTTA) Forum on 30 September. CLC represented Singapore at the #U20 Mayors Summit in Johannesburg, South Africa, last week. The U20 Mayors Summit, convened by United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG) and Local Governments (UGLC) and C40 Cities brought together leaders and delegates from over 30 cities worldwide. Executive Fellow Michael Koh spoke at several platforms during the Summit: ● U20 Mayoral Plenary – he shared on Singapore’s approach of a circular economy and the call for cities to engage in knowledge sharing ● Closing Plenary - he encouraged cities to share knowledge, provide capability development and recognise best practices through Singapore’s Lee Kuan Yew World City Prize. Michael also spoke about, and invited all participating cities to the upcoming 10th edition of the World Cities Summit ● #COP30 Mayoral Briefing – Michael highlighted the COP SG Pavilion and called for cities to visit especially on Cities Day. CLC further connected with leaders from 24 cities and 6 international organisations across Europe, Asia, North America, Latin America, and Africa, focusing on the value of global collaboration in tackling complex urban issues. The discussions led by United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG) and C40 Cities were fast paced, future oriented and allowed cities represented to contribute towards the Urban 20 Communique to be presented to G20 leaders.
