On 9 October 2025, Science Centre Singapore and the Lee Kong Chian Natural History Museum held a media preview for ‘Dinosaurs | Extinctions | Us’—commemorating the launch of this spectacular showcase and collaboration between the Museum, Science Centre Singapore, as well as our international associates; Museo Paleontológico Egidio Feruglio and Gondwana Studios. We were thrilled to see the exhibition come to life with its astonishing array of dinosaur casts, rare fossils and specimens, thoughtfully curated to portray our planet’s deep history and our role in shaping what comes next. 🦕🦜 Find out more here: https://lnkd.in/e53JXhNF Photo credits: Science Centre Singapore and LKCNHM #LKCNHM #ScienceCentreSG #DinosaursExtinctionsUS #ThingsToDo #ExploreSG #Extinction #Dinosaurs #SCSDinos #BackFromExtinction #SixthExtinction

The Science Centre recently held an exclusive media preview of DINOSAURS | EXTINCTIONS | US, that is set to open from 11 October 2025. In collaboration with the Lee Kong Chian Natural History Museum, Faculty of Science, at the National University of Singapore, this bold new showcase brings together world-renowned exhibitions such as Dinosaurs of Patagonia and Six Extinctions, for the very first time. Guests can look forward to an awe-inspiring journey through 400 million years of Earth’s history, across six immersive zones. Featuring over 30 rare fossils and 60 full-scale models, the key highlight is a full-scale cast of the towering 40-metre Patagotitan mayorum, one of the largest dinosaurs ever discovered. The experience then concludes with a thought-provoking look at the sixth mass extinction unfolding in our time, featuring Singapore’s own extinction story with once-extant native species that are now locally extinct. Thank you Lee Kong Chian Natural History Museum, National University of Singapore, Museo Paleontológico Egidio Feruglio, Gondwana Studios Pty Ltd and Akrom, for being a part of this dino-sized journey! On 7 October 2025, OceanX and the National University of Singapore (NUS) set sail aboard the advanced research vessel OceanXplorer for a 24-day mission to the Monsoon Rise, a largely unexplored seamount chain in the eastern Indian Ocean. The team, which comprises of scientists from the Lee Kong Chian Natural History Museum and the NUS Tropical Marine Science Institute from NUS, NTU, and other countries such as Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam and Fiji, will collaborate with OceanX’s global research team to map and document more than 17,000 square kilometres of deep-sea terrain. Using submersibles, remotely operated vehicles, and environmental DNA sampling, the mission will provide the first comprehensive baseline of biodiversity in the Monsoon Rise. Stay tuned for upcoming stories from the expedition! Find out more about the mission here: https://lnkd.in/gNWRBpDB Photo credits: OceanX and LKCNHM

This is a first—for Singapore, for ocean science, and for the High Seas. The Indian Ocean remains one of the least explored frontiers on Earth. Now, just one week after 74+ nations ratified the High Seas Treaty, Into the Deep: Monsoon Rise 2025 sets sail. Led by OceanX and the National University of Singapore, this is the first mission globally launched in the spirit of the Treaty—uniting scientists from Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, and Fiji to explore two uncharted seamounts in international waters. By bringing together scientific leaders from across Asia and the Pacific, the expedition is building a new foundation for deep-sea research in the region. It gives countries shared access to advanced exploration tools, strengthens their capacity to study and protect marine biodiversity, and creates a lasting framework for collaboration that can shape how the region understands and stewards its ocean for decades to come. After 15 days, we’ve finally finished defleshing the baleen whale carcass! Here’s the progress of the carcass over the past few days of defleshing. Next, we’ll be degreasing the bones. Stay tuned for more updates. Did you know that the insects present on the carcass of an animal can tell us a lot about the state of decomposition? Blow flies are usually the first to appear at a decomposing body, attracted by the smell emitted by the carcass. Maggots are seen on the carcass a few days later, when the eggs that female flies have laid on the decaying body hatch into larvae. They liquefy and consume the soft tissue of the body, increasing surface area for microbial activity. Finally, some beetles are attracted too, receiving chemical signals from both the chemical odour of the maggots and decaying body. Find out more about the insect clean-up crew here: https://lnkd.in/gSCU943x #LKCNHM #WhaleCarcass #WhaleSalvage #BaleenWhale #Maggots #Decomposition #InsectCrew

[Content warning: Graphic images of animal carcass and decomposition. Viewer discretion is advised.] On 13 September, LKCNHM collected our first tissue samples from the baleen whale carcass for genetic analysis. We commenced defleshing work on 15 September, which has been ongoing since. More updates on the salvage operation to come. From 10–14 September 2025, we held our first-ever September school holiday programme, ‘Dinosaurs, Extinctions, Fossils’, as part of the Museum’s 10th Anniversary celebrations! We were happy to welcome 130 participants over seven sessions, ready to explore the world of dinosaurs with us! 🦕🦖 Each session consisted of a planetarium show, a guided gallery tour and a hands-on activity involving paleoart, ‘Beyond the Bones’! A jaw-dropping moment (literally)! During the salvage operation of the baleen whale carcass on 12 September 2025 near the Marina Bay Cruise Centre, one side of its mandible (i.e. the right lower jaw) dislodged and fell into the water. Fortunately, the following morning, on 13 September, the Singapore Salvage Engineers (SSE) successfully recovered the mandible. Curious to know more?
