Urban resilience is becoming an investable, growth-driving economy 🤔 Say what? + A new “resilience economy” is emerging where measurable impact, inclusive growth and collaboration between cities, investors, insurers and developers create shared value. + The private sector is rapidly entering the resilience space: investors, insurers and developers are treating adaptation as a profitable asset class—not just a cost. + Cities are moving from reactive crisis management to proactive capital mobilization—embedding resilience into finance, planning and data systems. 📣 Together, the Resilient Cities Network and the World Economic Forum are collaborating to bridge the $4.3 trillion annual resilience investment gap, unlocking private capital and creating finance-ready city portfolios. 💡 Resilience is no longer about recovery — it’s about returns. What does climate neutrality look like when national and local ambitions truly align? At the Arctic Circle, leaders from Reykjavík, Iceland’s ministries, and national partners came together to unpack this question - and the answers pointed to one thing: collaboration is Iceland’s strongest climate asset. Reykjavík’s Mayor Heiða Björg Hilmisdóttir reminded us that local climate action depends on trust, shared purpose, and policies that match ambition with means. 🏛️ National representatives called for breaking down silos between sectors, especially tourism and energy, to create real pathways to net zero. ⚙️National ministries are signaling readiness to create mechanisms that channel national resources to municipalities. ✈️Tourism leaders are treating climate-smart travel as a lever for emissions cuts through shared rules, infrastructure and mobility planning with cities. 🏘️ Municipal associations are pushing for tools that help smaller cities move in step, not behind. Because achieving climate neutrality isn’t about one policy or one city - it’s about connecting the systems. Can community-powered investment build momentum for climate action? In Bristol, the city teamed up with ethical investment platform Abundance Investment to develop an accessible platform for engaged citizens and other private investors to take part in the city's net zero transition, building local ownership and raising awareness through a highly successful, disruptive advertising campaign. The Bristol Climate Action Investment is accelerating efforts to engage residents and communities for climate impact. #CitiesSolveCitiesDeliver #FinancingResilience. What can preparing for earthquakes tell us about building heat and flood resilience? 💬 “Our experience managing seismic risk in Mexico City offers critical lessons for addressing other climate challenges like flooding or extreme heat," shared Norlang Marcel García Arróliga, Director General of Resilience. No matter what type of risks they face, gathering and managing data is essential for cities to develop effective protection measures that provide financial relief after a disaster and that build resilience beforehand. In conversation with public and private sector leaders at the 𝐈𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐑𝐢𝐬𝐤 𝐅𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 – 𝐁𝐚𝐧𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐞 forum as part of the México por el Clima platform, we heard loud and clear that risk management and resilience is an opportunity for all sectors to drive social and economic impact. As we look ahead to COP30 in Belém, strengthening multi-sector collaboration will be key to designing climate finance solutions that are inclusive, equitable, and locally grounded. #CitiesSolveCitiesDeliver #FinancingResilience Javier Garduño Ricardo Alvarado, PhD Rosa Vélez Ivonne Beltrán

🏃♀️➡️ 100+ European cities are racing toward climate neutrality — now, Rotterdam, Eindhoven and Helmond are the latest to be recognized for their leadership. 📍In Rotterdam, years of shared ownership are shaping a new model of climate governance. With over 100+ companies and 1,000+ residents who helped develop the city’s 2019 Climate Agreement, Rotterdam is driving deep emission cuts and creating fairer, more circular pathways to climate neutrality. 📍Eindhoven and Helmond are driving a joint approach to circular and just urban transitions, promoting fair energy systems, accessible funding for low-income households and youth participation through digital tools. For these transformative efforts, the European Commission awarded them the Mission Label⚡, recognizing the strength of their Climate City Contracts and supporting access to public and private funding to accelerate decarbonization. With this milestone, the EU Mission for Climate-Neutral and Smart Cities has now exceeded its goal of supporting 100 cities by 2030, awarding the Mission Label to 103 cities across Europe. Together, we're one step closer to a climate-neutral Europe. Most residents want cooler, greener communities, but where do they start? When community members in Boston advocated to preserve an underused, city-owned lot for green space, the first question was how to turn it into a space people would actually want to use. They teamed up with YouthBuild Boston and Architecture for Public Benefit to design and build shade and seating to invite residents to use the space and encourage the city to make further improvements. 💭 Their experiences, strategies and design ideas served as inspiration for the Tactical Guide to Cooling Infrastructure. In Lagos, the math behind investing in resilience is straightforward: act now or pay 4x more later. Failing to act on flooding, extreme heat and sea-level rise could cost up to $39 billion, but, at a quarter of the cost, those risks could be averted. One major challenge is proving the value of resilience to investors. That's why the Lagos State Resilience Office (LASRO) worked with partners like FSD Africa to develop a portfolio of nature and infrastructure-based projects to address interconnected risks with integrated solutions. Lagos shows how City Resilience Portfolios are #FinancingResilience to #FundTheFuture. #CitiesSolveCitiesDeliver #DRRDay #ResiliencePays

🪙🌱If we want to fund resilience, not disasters, we must start by recognizing risks and listening to communities. This International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction, we are encouraged to democratize risk awareness and understanding. That’s why we’re proud to announce our partnership with Lloyd's Register Foundation, creators of the World Risk Poll, Arup and the cities of Lagos and Salvador to create a people-centered approach to resilience. Together, we’re bringing 147,000 voices from 142 countries into local resilience planning, helping city leaders prioritize investments that respond both to lived experience and scientific data. Resilience is becoming unaffordable for many cities. 🧯As disasters intensify and insurance rates increase, cities need new ways to finance resilience. But the problem isn’t just how much we fund individual projects. The challenge? It’s how we finance resilience with consistency and at scale. The ⚡new⚡ City Resilience Portfolio Approach helps cities plan and attract capital. Built from city experience with support from Tokio Marine Group, it provides a pathway to mobilize investment and embed resilience into city systems. “Insurance is built on a promise to provide stability in uncertain times, and today, that promise is being tested as never before.” — Brad Irick, Managing Executive Officer and Co-Head of International, Tokio Marine Holdings.
