𝗠𝗮𝗹𝗮𝘆𝘀𝗶𝗮’𝘀 𝗦𝗲𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝗽𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗿𝗼𝘀𝘀-𝗕𝗼𝗿𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝗼𝗹𝘃𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆 𝗕𝗶𝗹𝗹. 𝗪𝗲 𝗲𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗿𝗹𝘆 𝗮𝘄𝗮𝗶𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗰𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗿𝗼𝘀𝘀-𝗕𝗼𝗿𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝗼𝗹𝘃𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆 𝗔𝗰𝘁. The law will apply solely to corporations (excluding LLPs and business trusts), with the Government indicating that expansion to individual insolvency may follow in a later phase. Clause 21 (mirroring Article 21 of the Model Law) allows courts to permit a foreign representative to transfer a debtor’s property abroad. But with safeguards of obtaining leave of Court, and where claims of creditors in Malaysia up to a threshold sum must first be satisfied locally. Deputy Minister M. Kulasegaran explained that: "At present, the study is ongoing to determine a fair threshold by taking into account all input and perspectives, ensuring the final value set is truly balanced, in line with the objectives of the Bill, while protecting creditors' interests and safeguarding micro, small and medium enterprises in Malaysia," he said. https://lnkd.in/gNYgJCKF

Hot News - There has been a significant development concerning the draft Vietnam Personal Data Protection Law (PDPL). Initially, the tentative enactment date for this legislation was set for October 2025. However, the Government has recently adopted a new Resolution No. 41/NQ-CP regarding the Specialized Session on Law Making in February 2025 (“Resolution 41”) to expedite the legislative process. As a result, the Ministry of Public Security has been tasked with submitting the draft PDPL to the National Assembly for official adoption in May 2025. This accelerated timeline underscores Vietnam's unwavering commitment to strengthening data protection regulations.

As law students, many of us wondered: What does legal practice really look like? What does an in-house lawyer actually do? Last week, I had the privilege of joining my IBM colleagues for an interactive Q&A with students at the National University of Singapore – Faculty of Law to discuss those very questions. Giving back to law schools is always rewarding. The link between industry and academia has never been more critical, especially as technology reshapes the legal profession. We explored questions like: - What does life as an in-house lawyer in a technology company really look like? - When is the right time to move in-house - from law school or private practice and whether can you return to private practice? - Specialist vs. generalist - how do you decide? - What qualities and skills matter most today given AI is reshaping professions? The common thread -  adaptability, curiosity and continuous learning. AI may transform legal work, but good judgment, critical thinking and collaboration remain irreplaceable. A big thank you to NUS Faculty of Law and Genevieve Chia Su Lin for hosting us. Many thanks to the Dean, Professor Andrew Simester, for giving us the opportunity for championing stronger industry - academia collaboration. IBM has been working with NUS on several initiatives and earlier in week we announced the establishment of the IBM–NUS Research and Innovation Center which will work on breakthrough research powered by IBM’s full stack of AI infrastructure, open models and IBM’s Quantum technologies.
