🌱 🌏 New report: How can renewable #hydrogen power Southeast Asia’s #energytransition? Together with the NewClimate Institute, and as part of the CASE for Southeast Asia project, we recently published a technology brief that examines the outlook for renewable hydrogen-based power generation in #SoutheastAsia, from co-firing to 100% hydrogen- or ammonia-firing. The brief assesses its potential role alongside the associated risks, offering policy considerations for governments to evaluate renewable hydrogen’s place in broader energy transition strategies. Key insights from the brief: 💡 Renewable hydrogen adds value as seasonal storage and peaking capacity. 💡 Co-firing hydrogen and ammonia in coal and gas plants offers limited emission reductions at relatively high costs. Scaling renewables and grids offer a lower-cost route to reach climate targets. Optimization of electricity futures and LNG futures trading under practical constraints of power producers in Japan, Misao Endo, 2024. Abstract: In this study, we developed a mixed-integer programming model that can help maximize the profit of the gas-fired power generation business in Japan. Owing to the practical constraints of liquefied natural gas (LNG) cargo, LNG tank, and power generating unit, Japanese gasfired power producers are currently unable to effectively utilize the futures market. By using this model, power producers can calculate the optimal futures position and the number of spot LNG cargoes to buy/sell in response to the daily changing forward spark spread. The numerical simulation shows that the optimal electricity futures position decreases in a stepwise manner against the electricity futures price.

💡 Beyond the SPV: What Aircraft Leasing Can Teach Renewables About Unlocking Capital Renewables need trillions in new capital to meet global energy transition targets. Yet the sector remains stuck in SPV silos- each wind farm, solar park, or battery site financed and reported in isolation. That structure got us here, but it won’t get us further. Meanwhile, aircraft leasing has shown how transparency can transform capital markets. Planes are investable because they come with standardized, auditable data- flight hours, maintenance logs, condition checks, resale markets. Investors can price risk with confidence. Renewables lag because we don’t yet have the equivalent of “flight hours and maintenance logs.” Opaque SPVs, inconsistent metrics, patchy records, and limited resale options keep capital costs high and liquidity shallow. 🔑 The breakthrough? Turbine-level transparency. - Standardized performance data - Predictive health analytics - Auditable maintenance histories - A financial engine that allocates revenues and costs at the unit level With these in place, turbines become mini cashflow engines—able to be pooled, tranched, securitized, and even tokenized. Just like aircraft. The result: ✅ Structured finance (Green CLOs) ✅ Credible NAVs tied to real asset performance ✅ Wider investor access and liquidity Yes, transparency cuts both ways: strong managers will win cheaper capital, while weak assets will be exposed. 🌿 Singapore to Contract 2.175M Tonnes of High-Quality Nature-Based Carbon Credits 🌍 We are taking another step forward in our journey toward net zero by 2050. The Government will contract ~2.175 million tonnes of CO₂e in nature-based carbon credits from four projects across Ghana, Peru, and Paraguay (2026–2030), valued at about S$76M. 🔑 Why it matters • Leverages Article 6 mechanism to complement Singapore’s domestic decarbonisation as we are a small and resource constrained country. • Provides clear demand signal to drive financing into high quality carbon credits projects, and signal our support for nature-based solutions as a much needed part of the climate solution. • Supports Singapore’s 2030 climate pledge (NDC) under the Paris Agreement. • Article 6 carbon credits can be a catalyst to unlock green growth opportunities. Demand for carbon services – from trading and advisory to MRV and financing - is set to grow. • Channels benefits back to host countries, including funding for climate adaptation and improved community livelihoods. 🌱 These projects will protect forests, restore grasslands, and reforest degraded land – while empowering local communities and conserving biodiversity. 🌳 Yes, nature-based solutions carry risks like permanence and verification, but they are also among the most effective ways we have today to protect biodiversity, support local communities, and buy time while we decarbonise harder-to-abate sectors.
