👉 In a new op-ed, Verra CEO Mandy Rambharos responds to the claim that carbon markets "represent a policy failure and a moral failure.“ Mandy emphasizes that, in fact, it is giving up on these markets that would be a moral failure.   The article that alleges that "carbon projects almost always fail" , Mandy continues, presents a one-sided view and is based on an article in the Guardian that has been debunked by other analysts.   In addition, there are a number of carbon projects that contradict the hypothesis of failed carbon projects. They include the following:   🌍 The TIST Program, which has enabled 230,000+ Kenyan farmers to plant 26 million tree 🌍 The Delta Blue Carbon project in Pakistan, which has restored 600,000 hectares of mangroves 🌍 The Corazón Verde del Chaco project in Paraguay, which has protected 32,000 hectares of forest that are also a critical habitat for jaguars and other species   These are just some of the tangible, verifiable impacts of high-integrity carbon markets that are happening on the ground, in places where climate finance is often otherwise out of reach.   💡 Yes, the carbon markets have had challenges and can still be strengthened. But dismissing an entire system because of some missteps is a problematic oversimplification with real-life consequences for many, especially in the Global South. 🌎 The Nature Conservancy, with support from MSCI Carbon Markets, has published an important new report highlighting four use cases for "nature to fill the implementation gap and go beyond net zero." A few reactions and highlights: - While there is a risk of companies over-using carbon credits, there is also a risk that science-based targets are unobtainable. It's time for more pragmatic action. - As a science-driven organization, it's notable that the Conservancy believes "carbon credits can play a larger role in the journey to net zero, complementing value chain mitigation in a way that enables a livable climate future." - The four use cases for carbon credits offer an easy-to-understand, rational alternative to the current dogma, reductions only after the net zero year. The fact that "closing the gap where internal decarbonization is falling short" (Use Case #1) is considered a novel use within existing frameworks (e.g., SBTI) suggests to me that we are way too far on the ideological end of the spectrum right now. - MSCI's analysis suggests it's reasonably possible for middle-of-the road use of carbon credits to address ~5% of our mitigation needs. "This is far from a silver bullet for meeting climate goals, but a significant impact." - Of course, "For NCS credits specifically, emissions reductions should be prioritized over removals credits until the goals of the COP26 Glasgow Leaders' Declaration on Forests and Land Use have been met to halt and reverse global deforestation by 2030." Last week, the Building Bridges team convened a panel on 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗼𝗹𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗽𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗶𝗻 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘆 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, where we explored how capital can be mobilised towards decarbonisation at speed and scale, particularly in Asia where coal plants remain young and energy demand is growing rapidly. 🔑 𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝗧𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗮𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀 from Kimberly Tan, Head of Investments, GenZero 1️⃣ 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗯𝗼𝗻 𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗱𝗶𝘁𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗮 𝘃𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗼𝗼𝗹 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘆 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 💡 Carbon credits - and transition credits in particular - play a critical role as a financial instrument that can effectively channel finance from corporates to energy transition projects. This can accelerate the early retirement of coal-fired power plants, support clean energy deployment and a just transition for affected communities. However, integrity of such carbon projects are critical. 2️⃣ 𝗥𝗶𝘀𝗸𝘀 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗯𝗲 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗱 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗱𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻  📊 Assessments must go beyond diligence on the underlying science to also consider the robustness of engineering, real-world scalability and unit cost trajectories, particularly for early-stage and first-of-a-kind climate technologies. You can’t diligence away fundamental risk, so a portfolio approach is also critical. 3️⃣ 𝗧𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗴𝘂𝗮𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗲 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁  ✳️Even if the technology works, users must be willing to pay for and adopt the technology to achieve climate impact. This requires a clear value proposition and a sound commercial logic and business model. Investors adopting a disciplined investment approach must be confident in the business case without the need for a green premium. 4️⃣ 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗯𝗼𝗻 𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗯𝗲 𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝘁𝗼 𝘂𝗻𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗸 𝗰𝗮𝗽𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗮𝘁 𝘀𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗲 ⚖️ A clear and durable price on carbon, whether via carbon taxes or emissions trading schemes, will embed the true cost of emissions. Day one complete of the Green Climate Fund's 'Private Investment for Climate Conference' in Abu Dhabi, in partnership with Environmental Finance. Common themes are appearing on how to scale up blended finance: - Don't come to the table with pre-cooked ideas and expect the private sector to accept it - Public finance needs to stop competing with private capital - particularly for the 'big sexy infrastructure projects'. Instead public capital needs to look at more nascent themes they can help de-risk - More needs to be done to create a pipeline of bankable projects for adaptation , particularly in emerging markets - Global investors/investors in developed economies need to recognise that sustainability trends are changing - no longer are developed economies the leaders on sustainability/a safe bet. Instead, more recognition is needed on the ambition (and progress so far) of many emerging economies - and recognition that this is often where the biggest financial and impact opportunities lie.
