🌍 Our director, Irena Fonda, was invited to participate in the outstanding Asterousia Hybrid University 2025 in Crete, organized under UNESCO’s Man and the Biosphere (MAB) Programme! 🏞️ The event is taking place in the beautiful Asterousia Biosphere Reserve on Crete, exploring how to connect natural and cultural heritage for a sustainable future. Experts from across the Mediterranean are participating in lectures, workshops, and field visits, exchanging experiences on nature conservation, sustainable tourism, circular economy, and community engagement. Irena presented the work and mission of our YouSea Institute to the participants. 🔬 𝐋𝐨𝐧𝐠-𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐦 𝐦𝐮𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐥 𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐬 𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 TEAMFORADRIS Project This month, as part of our activities under the TeamForAdris project, we carried out another round of mussel sampling at our shellfish farm in the northern Adriatic. We collected two sets of samples: • 30 farmed mussels • 30 naturally settled mussels Both were submitted for histopathological analysis at the Veterinary Institute of Ljubljana, helping us detect potential pathogens or health anomalies. In parallel, we conducted biometric analyses at the Marine Biology Station Piran, including measurements of shell length, wet and dry mass. These are used to calculate the condition index, a key indicator of mussel physiological status. 🔍 Why this matters: Routine, science-based monitoring is essential for understanding the effects of environmental conditions on shellfish health. Tracking changes over time supports sustainable aquaculture and helps identify early warning signs of ecosystem stress. 📊 The data collected across multiple months will allow us to observe trends and seasonal shifts – contributing to broader efforts in marine ecosystem monitoring and adaptive management. V Sečoveljskem zalivu so v teh dneh namestili drugo podvodno strukturo za razvoj marikulture in raziskovanje naseljevanja organizmov. Kot so za STA dejali v zavodu YouSea, je medtem prva struktura, Morska oaza Piran, že povsem preraščena z mnogimi organizmi, skoznjo pa plavajo jate različnih vrst rib, ki se lahko uspešno širijo v okolico. #STAznanost #morje YouSea Institute - Zavod YouSea

📢 Nova podvodna struktura Cladocora – nov korak v soustvarjanju trajnostne prihodnosti slovenskega morja 🌊 V Zavodu YouSea z veseljem sporočamo, da smo s podporo Bauhaus Slovenija, našega glavnega partnerja in sponzorja, uspešno postavili drugo umetno podvodno strukturo v slovenskem morju – poimenovano Cladocora, po simbolni jadranski kameni korali (𝒞𝓁𝒶𝒹𝑜𝒸𝑜𝓇𝒶 𝒸𝒶𝑒𝓈𝓅𝒾𝓉𝑜𝓈𝒶). 🔧 Struktura, sestavljena iz mrežastih železnih plošč, je zasnovana za: - spodbujanje biodiverzitete in raznolikosti morskih organizmov, - večtrofično marikulturo, - varovanje ogroženih vrst, - ter izboljšanje kakovosti morske vode. Prva podvodna struktura, Morska oaza Piran, je že dokazala učinkovitost tovrstnih rešitev – postala je inovativni model gojišča in zatočišča za številne vrste. Z novo strukturo Cladocora gradimo na tej izkušnji in hkrati odpiramo dodatne priložnosti za raziskave, izobraževanje in trajnostni turizem. 💬 »Veseli nas, da se je prva Morska oaza Piran izkazala za uspešno gojišče in hkrati tudi zatočišče številnim organizmom in dokazala, da lahko z inovativnimi rešitvami pomagamo naravi pri regeneraciji. Postavitev Cladocore je pomemben korak naprej, ki potrjuje, da je mogoče tudi v slovenskem morju ustvarjati pogoje za trajnostno prihodnost,« poudarja dr. 🌊 Filming our awareness campaign for the #TEAMFORADRIS project 🎬 Mussel (Mytilus galloprovincialis) mortality has become a growing concern in the Adriatic-Ionian Sea, with some areas experiencing losses of over 95%.
