When Billboard reports that an AI-powered artist has signed a multi-million-dollar record deal, we might smile and dismiss it as another headline in the great AI carnival. But beneath the glitter lies a serious question: what are companies buying when they sign a contract not with a person, but with a process? In the case of Xania Monet, the human writes the lyrics, the machine sings the song, and the lawyer wonders who, in the end, owns the echo. The ambiguity is not only legal, it is existential. Copyright law, with its neat categories of author and work, suddenly trembles before the blurred gesture of collaboration between a woman in Mississippi and an algorithm trained on countless invisible voices. The industry, so quick to proclaim authenticity as a brand, now seeks to monetize avatars whose very essence is hybrid. What does it mean to follow a career, to build loyalty, when the artist is not a body but a stream of code? This is where the music world joins the larger story of the creator economy. On YouTube, itself preparing for what it calls its “next big bang” through AI-generated video, the same frontier is being tested. The platform that once democratized distribution—anyone, anywhere, could upload—now promises to democratize creation itself. A young user no longer needs a band, a studio, or even an instrument: with a few prompts, a song or a clip can be conjured into existence. The barrier to entry has collapsed. But when everything can be produced instantly, what becomes scarce is not output but resonance, not content but connection. We are thus entering the age of the AI-assisted creator economy, where scale is infinite, but value lies in curation, storytelling, and the fragile thread of human attention. Just as the art market has learned that smoothness seduces only briefly while friction sustains meaning, so too will the music and video industries discover that audiences cling not to perfection but to the grain of the voice, the imperfection that signals life. The real question is not whether AI will compose the next hit, but whether it will be able to create the bond, the myth, the memory that makes a song endure. In the end, these deals are less about music than about positioning: labels, platforms, and creators all rushing to claim first-mover advantage in a marketplace where novelty is currency. But the true challenge is still before us: to ensure that the machine multiplies our possibilities without erasing the singularity of the encounter. For whether in a gallery, a concert, or a YouTube stream, what we seek is not the endless flood of production, but the rare moment where technology, art, and humanity meet—and something larger than us begins to resonate. Meta’s XR Push: Innovation or the Largest Advertising Data Harvest in History? Meta’s new VR headsets, AR glasses, and its vast spending on AI are being presented as steps toward a more connected future. But we should ask the uncomfortable question: Are these really tools for connection? Or are they for advertising driven surveillance at a scale we have never seen before? Maybe my years in corporate marketing have made me cynical, but let's follow the money for a minute: In Mark Zuckerberg's own words "We sell Ads" - Over 98 percent of Meta’s revenue still comes from highly targeted advertising. Meanwhile their "Reality Labs" XR division continues to run at heavy losses - and frequently sells products at or even below cost. So, why would an advertising company persist with this loss leading strategy... unless it is intended to lead to a larger long-term payoff? What makes Meta's ad sales so popular and profitable is how incredibly well targeted they are; which requires vast amounts of user-data to achieve. With XR the addionional data harvesting potential is enormous - these wearable devices capture far more than clicks or cookies, they can scan your home, track your gaze and pupil dilation, register your emotional reactions, pick up your words and tone, and follow your movements in real time. AI then closes the loop: With the object recignition focused AI systems Meta is focusing their development on, they can train systems to recognise what you are looking at and to correlate these objects to your emotional responses as you experience them. Imagine advertising calibrated to your stress, excitement, or even to the precise object you are looking at in your living room. The terms of service for Meta’s just released "Hyperscape Capture" (which 3D models your surroundings) seem to confirm this intent: By using it, you grant Meta broad rights over 3D scans of your home and interactions, rights which can persist even after you delete your account. Meta can store, copy, share, and use these scans for AI development - meaning your home and posessions could live forever on Meta’s servers. This is the strategic bet: If Meta's XR glasses become essential for work, social life, and entertainment, they can secure continuous streams of behavioural, contextual, and emotional data. That could be the foundation for a next generation of advertising which is more persuasive, more pervasive and more profitable than anything before. XR has potential for genuine innovation - genuine benefits - but the scale of Meta’s investment and losses only make commercial sense if advertising is their ultimate goal. So, are we sleep-walking into an era where our homes, our bodies, and our emotions become the raw material for Meta’s next $Trillion in revenue? Or is this just a cynical old marketer over-interpreting their vision?
