FreeBASIC is versatile enough for professional use, yet friendly enough to teach children. Every compiler should strive to be this fun and user friendly. Hobbyists and professionals alike will enjoy it.

I made sure all the prereqs were installed on my Linux machine and then did the install. Get a bunch of errors on the hello.bas source supplied. Obviously not ready for a Linux environment.

Although FreeBasic started as a replacement for ms quick basic long time ago, it's much more today. Good documentation and an active forum are helpful for beginners. But also advanced programmers have fun with the solid working compiler. It's a good choise to generate cross-platform programs and applications even with GUI. The community is increasing the number of library bindings form day to day. Short: an insider's tip!

It's the ease of use of the old Microsoft QBasic and QuickBasic with the modernity and power of today's compilers. A very good first (and I would say also a very good /only/) language to learn and use.
