Today is International Day of the Girl Child and we are lifting up the girls who are already shaping the future. This year’s theme “The Girl I Am, The Change I Lead: Girls on the Frontlines of Crisis” reminds us that girls aren’t passive; they lead, resist, imagine, and act, even in the hardest places. At Save the Children, we believe every girl should be seen, heard, safe, and empowered. Over the last century, we’ve stood by girls through wars, climate disaster, poverty, displacement, and more.

Over the course of two days, Maria from Rukwa stepped into the role of Country Director for Save the Children Tanzania as part of the #GirlsTakeOver initiative, organized by Plan International. During her time in this leadership role, Maria visited our projects in Zanzibar, met with children and staff, and learned how Save the Children is creating opportunities for girls to learn, lead, and thrive. While in Zanzibar, she took part in the commemoration of the International Day of the Girl Child at Mgeni Haji Primary School, where she distributed menstrual kits to girls. She also visited the One Stop Center at Jitimai Hospital to see how we are responding to violence against children and women. Save the Children, kupitia mradi wake wa #VijanaPlus, tunashiriki katika Maadhimisho ya Wiki ya Vijana 2025 yanayofanyika jijini Mbeya kuanzia tarehe 8-15 Oktoba, chini ya kaulimbiu “Nguvu Kazi ya Vijana, Maendeleo Endelevu.” Kupitia maadhimisho haya, tutawakutanisha vijana wawakilishi kutoka mashirika yanayoongozwa na vijana nchini Tanzania, pamoja na Bodi ya Ushauri ya Vijana ya Umoja wa Ulaya (EU Youth Sounding Board) na wadau mbalimbali wa maendeleo ya vijana, kwa ajili ya mazungumzo na mijadala kuhusu mustakabali wao. Save the Children, tunatambua na kuthamini nguvu, ubunifu na mchango wa vijana katika kuleta mabadiliko wanayoyataka kwenye jamii zao.

Climate change isn’t a distant threat, it’s already disrupting how families live, farm, and feed their children. Through our projects, Save the Children is working side by side with communities in Tanzania to strengthen climate-smart agriculture. From drought-resistant crops to smarter farming practices, families are learning how to adapt and protect what matters most: their children’s health, safety, and future. Youth aren’t incapable of achieving great things, they just need the right support to take action on what matters to them. Save the Children, in partnership with Tanzania Bora Initiative, through its EU-funded project #VijanaPlus, is working to strengthen the capacity of youth-led CSOs to implement innovative and sustainable programs. The goal is to foster continuous engagement and constructive dialogue with decision-makers, while nurturing resilience, leadership, and good governance among young people. Because when youth are empowered, communities thrive.
