🌱 World Vegan Day reminds us that sustainable ingredients don’t always come from fields or factories - some come from flasks. 🦠 Through strain engineering, we can guide bacteria to produce key compounds that once came from plants or animals. 👉 Take Corynebacterium glutamicum - long used to produce amino acids like L-lysine and L-glutamate for food and nutrition. 👉 Or Streptomyces species, the same group that gave us antibiotics, now being explored for natural colorants and antioxidant molecules. 👉 Even Bacillus subtilis has been tuned to secrete surfactin, a biosurfactant that could replace synthetic detergents in food processing and cosmetics. ☝ A few more examples on our radar: 🔹 Riboflavin (vitamin B2) from engineered Ashbya and bacterial analogs for supplements and fortified foods. 🔹 Coenzyme Q10, produced by engineered Agrobacterium and Rhodobacter species. 🔹 Natural pigments such as actinorhodin or violacein - bacterial metabolites with potential as colorants and antioxidants. 🔹 Gamma-polyglutamic acid (γ-PGA) from Bacillus, used as a biodegradable thickener and water-retention agent in vegan foods. Microbial production isn’t just a lab curiosity. It’s a route to consistent, traceable, and cruelty-free ingredients made with less land and water, and fewer supply-chain surprises 👩🔬🙌 🧫 At Explogen, we work with bacterial hosts to express and optimise these kinds of pathways - reconstructing biosynthetic clusters that yield complex natural products without heavy agriculture or chemical synthesis. From soil fertility and food production to the discovery of antibiotics, their impact is immense. At Explogen, microorganisms are at the heart of our work.
