Relations between the two Western nations and Niger took a nosedive last year when the pro-West President Mohamed Bazoum was overthrown in a coup and Gen. Abdourahamane Tchiani took over as the new leader. The new junta has ordered France and the US to withdraw their troops from the country. So far, there have been five coups in the country since it became independent in 1960.
I reproduce here an article I wrote in the then London-based weekly news magazine, “West Africa” 38 years ago in 1986 on the occasion of the visit to Paris of the then President of Niger, Gen Seyni Kountche. Relations with the US are also broached in the paper. That enables us to view relations between Niger and the two “Great powers” then and now.
