Ubuntu 25.10 snapshot 4, the new monthly snapshot release of the next Ubuntu release, is available to download.
This is the final snapshot release for 25.10, as next will be the Beta release planned for September 18, while Ubuntu 25.10 stable release will be available on October 9.
Ubuntu 25.10, code-name Questing Quokka, is coming soon in next few months. Now, the default wallpapers are out!
As usual, the default wallpaper is made up of the mascot (quokka) in center, a type of wallaby from southwestern Australia, and a gradient background.
As you see via the image below, this time it looks like a quokka that’s hopping and bounding to Ubuntu (the small logo) on the earth.
Ubuntu 25.10 Default Wallpaper (optimized for loading fast)
GNOME 49, the default desktop environment for next Ubuntu 25.10 and Fedora Workstation 43, is available for Beta testing.
This Beta is available more than a month after the first Alpha. There will also be a RC release, while, the final of GNOME 49 is planned for September 17.
Ubuntu 25.10 snapshot 3, the third development release for the next Ubuntu release, is available for testing purpose.
As you may know, Ubuntu introduced monthly snapshot releases and released the first one in May 29. Now, the July release is finally available.
Wallpaper Contest for next Ubuntu 25.10, Questing Quokka, is opened. Submit or vote your favorite images!
Like the last contest, the submissions are separated into 3 categories: Mascot Theme, Digital / Abstract Art, and Photography. And top 2 voted images (6 images in total) in each category will be included in the 25.10 as optional wallpapers.
The first alpha release of GNOME Desktop 49 is out for testing purpose!
The developer team announced the release of this alpha one day ago. And, if everything goes well, GNOME 49 will be default in Ubuntu 25.10 and Fedora Workstation 43.

To follow the upstream GNOME’s road-map, Ubuntu confirmed to remove the classic X11/Xorg session in the next Ubuntu 25.10 release!
GNOME development team is planning to disable X11 session by default in next GNOME 49 and remove the code in v50.
TLDR: The X11 session for GNOME 49 will be disabled by default and it’s scheduled for removal, either during this development cycle or more likely during the next one (GNOME 50).
For those who are interested in the next Ubuntu 25.10 release, the first snapshot of the development version is available to download for testing on desktop, server, WSL.

The developer team started the development of Ubuntu 25.10 in last week. Now the release schedule and daily build live CD image are out!
Ubuntu 25.10, code-name Questing Quokka, is the next Ubuntu version planned to be released on October 09. It’s a short term release with 9-month support circle.
If everything goes well, it will feature GNOME 49 desktop and the latest Linux Kernel (probably v6.17 according to Kernel release interval).
