A tale of two stories for Antarctic krill 🦐 As the Convention for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR) draws to a close, a stark contrast emerges in the fate of Antarctic krill. The exploitation of krill, a tiny yet vital species, is pushing the Southern Ocean toward a dangerous tipping point with potentially far-reaching consequences for marine life and our climate. The kriller? Industrial fishing fleets who hoover up vast amounts of this crucial species to be turned into food for pets and farmed fish, as well as omega-3 dietary supplements. So, what happened at the CCAMLR conference? Norway reportedly proposed doubling krill quota to over a million tonnes. A single Norwegian company, Akerbiomarine, was responsible for 64% of the total Antarctic krill catch in 2023. The company has publicly stated that it supports the proposed marine protected area around the Antarctic peninsula, but according to news reports in Mongabay the actions of the country contradict this message 👉 https://lnkd.in/enZZ5Zic But it’s not all bad news. UK retailer Holland & Barrett took a bold step by withdrawing from the krill market while voicing support for stronger protections of Antarctic ecosystems. This brave move highlights that the wellness industry is responsive to public pressure and that consumers increasingly favour ocean friendly alternatives. Huge congratulations to Sea Shepherd Global, whose Antarctic campaigns helped drive this announcement. Our October positive news from the blue has landed 💙 “Hope is what enables us to keep going in the face of adversity. It is what we desire to happen, but we must be prepared to work hard to make it so.” Jane Goodall Every month we share these stories as a reminder that there is still hope for our ocean if we take action together. 🦐 Krill: The tiny crustacean at the heart of our ocean As members of the Convention for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR) gather this week in Hobart, Tasmania, to discuss the protection of Antarctica’s wildlife, many of the discussions will relate to that of krill. This tiny species forms the foundation of the Antarctic ecosystem, and the surrounding waters of the Southern Ocean are a vital regulator of our global climate. But Antarctic krill are being hoovered up on a massive scale to be turned into food for pets and farmed fish, as well as omega-3 dietary supplements. The exploitation of krill by several countries is pushing the Southern Ocean to a dangerous tipping point, which could have far-reaching consequences. Norway takes the vast majority of the krill catch, responsible for around two-thirds of all the krill caught in Antarctica. The time has come for nations to stand up to industry pressure and act on their mandate, which is conservation, not commercial profit. CCAMLR’s annual meeting is the moment for this ambition for Antarctica. Read more about krill in the Guardian here 👉 https://lnkd.in/etJQuBBc

DID YOU KNOW: Over 90% of Scotland’s inshore marine protected areas allow destructive bottom trawling? ❌ Earlier this year the Scottish Government announced that 93% of Scotland’s offshore marine protected areas would be closed to bottom trawling making important progress for the recovery of Scotland’s seas. BUT significant work still required to protect Scotland’s coastal waters. Focus must now shift to Scotland’s inshore waters, where some of our most productive habitats and vital ecosystems remain vulnerable, with bottom trawling still permitted in 90% of Marine Protected Areas. Effective protection will deliver benefits not only for marine life, but also for well-managed inshore fisheries, coastal communities, and wider society. “The Scottish Government must act now to restrict bottom-towed gear from our inshore MPAs and allow our seas to recover and thrive once again.” - Joe Richards, Scotland Project Manager Read more from STV here 👉 https://lnkd.in/eHFDmZd4

GOOD NEWS: motion to protect seamounts from bottom trawling passes with overwhelming majority Why are seamounts in need of protection? 🗻 They are biodiversity hotspots and vital feeding grounds that sustain ocean ❌ For decades, seamounts have been targeted by industrial, destructive fishing activities such as bottom trawling. 🪸 Bottom trawling on seamounts causes widespread, irreversible degradation of deep sea ecosystems. The motion calls on governments across the world to deliver on their commitments to banning bottom contact fishing on seamounts in international waters by the end of 2026. Helping to protect vital ocean life, from deep sea corals to migratory species like whales and sharks. Gulper sharks are vital for a healthy ocean, but humans are now the gulper sharks biggest threat. Proposed laws in the Maldives could reopen shark fishing, putting this already endangered species at serious risk. ❌ Find out how you can help protect them 👉 https://lnkd.in/etMKgqku Only One, Miyaru - Shark Programme, The Prophets Agency #SavetheSanctuary #HimaayathunNafaa #Sharks #Elasmobranch #TakeAction #OceanConservation

From #60toGlobal: What happens next for the #HighSeasTreaty? A major milestone for the ocean has been reached: 🌊 Over sixty countries have now ratified the #BBNJ Agreement, reaching the threshold needed for it to enter into force. This marks the start of a new era in ocean governance, but it’s not the finish line. It’s the beginning. The Treaty will officially enter into force on 17 January 2026, setting the stage for its first Conference of the Parties (CoP1). Now, the focus shifts to universal ratification: ensuring all countries join to make this Treaty truly global, inclusive, and effective. Every ratification strengthens the foundation for fair and coordinated protection of our shared ocean.
