"The most important reason why investors want to invest in you, is the team” – Theresa Hoffmann NANOPLUME’s team of two PhDs and an experienced deeptech builder was invested in through Carbon13’s Venture Builder earlier this year. Our SEIS Fund VIII is how we invest in our next Venture Builder teams, we’re running a webinar on the 4th November for angel investors, register here: https://lnkd.in/eiRjTHhq Nanoplume is an example from our previous fund, they quickly raised capital from us and investors such as IndieBio who agreed with us that the team is world class, the problem space massive, and the solution compelling. Nanoplume is tackling the $100 billion dollar insulation market where: 🏭 60% of energy in heating and cooling is being wasted 🛢️ 80% of insulator materials are based on petrochemicals Their breakthrough bio-based aerogel is o 60% lighter and thinner o 3 times as insulating o Reduces carbon emissions both in situ and in manufacture, and crucially helps humanity adapt to the changing climate. Mitigation AND adaption. It’s the Carbon13 approach refined over a dozen Venture Builders: form world class talent into resilient teams, apply great founder-mission fit, and then develop a breakthrough product that will outcompete and dominate the incumbents. Really proud to see two Carbon13 ventures named in this year’s #Cleantech50 to Watch – a global spotlight on the most promising early-stage climate innovators. Carbon Cell – replacing plastic foam with a high-performance, compostable material that actually locks carbon away for centuries. Elizabeth Lee, Ori Blich and Eden Harrison are showing how circular materials can beat fossil ones on every front. Ki Hydrogen – building the world’s most affordable co-production of green hydrogen and biogenic carbon. Koji Muto and Michael Stanton are rethinking how we make the core ingredients for the net-zero economy. Huge congrats to both teams – it’s been incredible to watch your journeys from the earliest spark of an idea to global recognition. Thank you to the Cleantech Group! If you want to know more about how to get involved with our latest cohort, our webinar for SEIS investors on the 4th November is our LAST before the fund closes, so we’re looking to meet more investors interested in deeptech, AI, materials, robotics and biotech. Thanks BBC News for the coverage on South Today 📺 An unexpected but always welcome visit allowing us to showcase what's possible with recycling technology. And above all, it's the commitment of Wembley Stadium to a circular supply chain, and the drive of Karl Standley in particular, that's made all of this possible. Looking forward to scaling the process together 🙌

Great initiative by our portfolio business Preoptima to help policymakers and planners from the London Councils learn more about Whole Life Carbon as part of a wider sustainability agenda for cities!
Empowering Local Authorities to Tackle Whole Life Carbon 🌍 Over the last few months, I had the pleasure of delivering a series of Whole Life Carbon (WLC) training sessions for a fantastic group of planners and policy makers from several London Local Planning Authorities as part of the London Councils Low Carbon Development Training programme, alongside our partners UK Green Building Council (UKGBC) and Bioregional. We explored how WLC sits within the wider sustainability agenda in planning, the importance of early engagement, and how to build confidence among WLC reviewers within LPAs. 📃 The sessions walked through the main components of a WLC assessment - from lengthy reports and Excel spreadsheets to practical application through real case studies, discussing their merits, limitations, and lessons learned. 💻 We also looked at the digitalisation of WLCA, starting with semi-digital approaches like checklists, Excel databases, and Power BI dashboards, before exploring Preoptima's Planning Application Carbon Evaluation and Reduction (PACER) tool as a more integrated digital solution. 👥 Finally, we discussed how to use policy wording effectively, build precedents that support consistency and confidence, and develop localised datasets for more relevant benchmarks. Above all, the key takeaway was the value of sharing knowledge, working collaboratively, and strengthening our network to accelerate progress toward net-zero. 🙏 A big thank you to everyone who joined and contributed - the engagement and discussion were truly inspiring. A special thank you to London Councils's for pushing forward the low carbon agenda and hosting, UK Green Building Council (UKGBC) for putting it all together, and to the amazing Alexandra Bantock who has co-developed the course with me (couldn't have done it without you!). #WholeLifeCarbon #EmbodiedCarbon #NetZero #LocalAuthorities #Planning #SustainableDesign #Digitalisation #BuiltEnvironment #Preoptima
