We’ve just returned from Cabot Highlands, where we had the chance to experience both the world-renowned Castle Stuart Golf Links and the much-anticipated new course, Old Petty during its limited preview play. With this window closing on September 30 ahead of its grand opening in Spring 2026, we couldn’t resist the chance to walk the fairways and get an early sense of what makes this course so special. In our latest story, "Cabot Highlands Unveils Old Petty", we share our thoughts on Tom Doak’s newest creation up close. From classic links greens and rumpled fairways to breathtaking views of the Moray Firth, the Black Isle and the historic 400-year old Castle Stuart watching over 13 of the 18 holes, Old Petty already feels like a natural part of the Highland landscape. Cabot Highlands: A Historic Backdrop for Scotland’s New Championship Golf Course Archaeological excavations at the site of the upcoming Old Petty Championship Golf Course Cabot Highlands, near Inverness, has uncovered a range of historical evidence dating back thousands of years. The discoveries, which include remnants of Neolithic wooden buildings, a prehistoric ceremonial circle, a 3,500-year-old Bronze Age cremation urn and evidence for medieval field systems and grain-drying kilns, add to Scotland’s rich and layered history.   The excavations, conducted by #AvonArchaeologyHighland, revealed at least 25 prehistoric wooden buildings alongside artifacts such as flint tools, quern stones, and a rare prehistoric chariot wheel. These findings paint a picture of ancient life in the Highlands, from ceremonial practices to agricultural innovation, between the Middle Ages and 6,000 years ago.   Stuart McColm, Vice-President of Golf Development, Cabot, said: "This has been a remarkable journey from pre-historic times to the present, right here on our doorstep. It’s humbling to think that our new championship course, Old Petty, will rest on such historically rich ground. We're proud to preserve this heritage while creating a world-class golf experience."   In keeping with Scottish archaeological best practice, efforts have been made to ensure the preservation of key features, including the prehistoric ceremonial circle, which has been carefully reburied in-situ.    Andy Young, Principal Archaeologist at Avon Archaeology Highland, praised the collaboration: "The partnership with Cabot Highlands has been exemplary. Their commitment to preserving the past while shaping the future is a model for responsible development."   The findings will be documented in detail, with final reports and radiocarbon dating expected in 2025, coinciding with the much-anticipated opening of the new Old Petty golf course.
