About us
DEEP is an international research and development organisation engineering new technologies which will improve understanding and preservation of the planet’s deep water environments. Our mission is to imagine and invent amazing things that empower our species to sustainably explore, live, work, and thrive underwater. By changing the way humans can interact with the oceans, we will revolutionise humanity’s ability to understand and protect them. Over 80% of our planet’s oceans remain almost completely unknown, unobserved, and unexplored. Yet marine ecosystems hold undiscovered solutions to many of the greatest problems facing humanity - including climate change, biodiversity loss and human health. DEEP is an expert team of highly experienced engineers, operations, and safety experts. We will drive progress in deep sea innovation and discovery in order to become stewards of the oceans and reshape our relationship with our planet.

Last week, members of DEEP’s team attended the annual Sub Operators Group (SOG) meeting in Tenerife — a key gathering bringing together a diverse cross-section of the submersible industry, from manufacturers and classification bodies to operators. Held ahead of the World Submarine Organization (WSO) annual meeting, SOG provides an invaluable forum for sharing operational experiences and lessons learned, strengthening safety standards across the global submersible community. As participants in these annual exercises, DEEP is proud to contribute to these discussions and ensure our work continues to support a united and safety-focused industry. Key takeaway: Continued collaboration through events like SOG and WSO is essential to maintaining — and advancing — the already robust safety standards of our industry. #Submersibles #OceanTechnology #Safety #Collaboration #DEEP #SOG Paul Nelson Dennis Nelson Seb Coulthard FRGS

Heading to SXSW Sydney this week? Don’t miss how DEEP is redefining how humans can spend time underwater. Sean Wolpert, CFA will be speaking at three sessions — plenty of chances to catch him live and explore how we’re making humans aquatic. #DEEP #OceanExploration #SXSWSydney

Shiny diving equipment alert 🪝 Here's a glimpse inside the warehouse where the different components of our saturation diving training facility await final assembly. Once complete, the system will prepare commercial divers for work in the deep ocean, and help train the people who will spend time on a DEEP subsea human habitat. #DEEP #OceanExploration #Equipment #SaturationDiving

Insulation ✅ New paint ✅ Neon wow factor ✅ Here's the latest look at Vanguard's living chamber, where crew will live, work and rest during their underwater missions. Now the chamber is fully insulated and coated in specialized paint, the next step is assembling the finished habitat. Have you seen anything else this color before? Let us know in the comments or post an image with #DEEPNeon #DEEP #OceanExploration #DEEPNeon

Norman Smith, DEEP’s Chief Technology Officer, grew up idolizing Jacques Cousteau and his underwater innovations. Today, Norman and his team are following in those footsteps. DEEP is in the final phases of building and testing Vanguard – the first subsea habitat of its kind to be constructed in almost four decades. Read Norman’s blog about DEEP’s first operational habitat: https://bit.ly/48M5gBm #DEEP #JacquesCousteau #OceanExploration

Time underwater. Vanguard is our first subsea habitat. It will allow people to live on the ocean floor and have extended time underwater – we’re talking days and weeks, rather than hours and minutes. Vanguard will be used for a range of purposes including marine science, education, coral restoration, and spaceflight training. #DEEP #OceanExploration #Vanguard

📣 DEEP is expanding into the U.S. 🇺🇸 Our mission to make humans aquatic has taken us across the Atlantic. As part of the expansion, we’re building our first subsea human habitat, Vanguard, in Florida. We’ve assembled a team of partners for the project, which includes Bastion Technologies, Inc., Unique Group, and Triton Submarines LLC. DEEP Manufacturing has also acquired a 50,000 square feet facility in Houston to extend its capabilities in additive manufacturing to U.S. and global customers in the aerospace, energy and defense sectors. We can’t wait to collaborate with U.S. partners and communities, and complete the building and testing of Vanguard! This month marks the anniversary of the legendary vessel FLIP beginning its first operations. After being tested in the Dabob Bay area of the Hood Canal in Washington, FLIP was towed to San Diego and started her life in September 1962 as a research platform for oceanography, meteorology, geophysics, and biology. We can't wait to complete FLIP's refit and see her back in the open ocean. #DEEP #FLIP #Anniversary
