💧 We were thrilled to had the Chair of the Environment Agency, Alan Lovell, join us alongside The Rivers Trust to take part in citizen science water testing on the River Itchen in Hampshire today. Activities like this underscore the critical role that communities play in safeguarding our rivers. 🧪📋 Citizen science initiatives like our #GreatUKWaterBlitz and The Rivers Trust's #BigRiverWatch are generating robust data that complements official monitoring efforts. This is a crucial step towards integrating community data into national freshwater monitoring frameworks and ensuring our rivers are healthy from source to sea. We're excited to see this growing recognition of the invaluable work carried out by citizen scientists. A massive thank you to everyone who gets involved! 🚨 New analysis from the Campaign for National Parks and the The Rivers Trust reveals that rivers in our national parks are twice as polluted as those outside them! It's a dire situation and a stark reminder of the urgent need for comprehensive data on UK freshwater health. 🧪 💧 This is precisely why the citizen science movement is so critical. As part of our #GreatUKWaterBlitz campaign, thousands of volunteers collect data which complements official monitoring and provides vital evidence to drive policy change. Our report in April showed that 66% of data points had poor water quality, with England having the worst results across the UK. The next WaterBlitz is taking place this weekend, coinciding with The Rivers Trust's #BigRiverWatch campaign, with a record number of people signed up to help gather more data and build a complete picture of the state of our waterways. 📄 Our Great UK WaterBlitz report on the findings will be published in October. We believe data-driven change is the only way forward to ensure our rivers are healthy from source to sea. 🌳 “Fast-growing miniature forests in the middle of cities can bring surprisingly big benefits for people and the environment.” Since 2020, we have worked with our partners and communities across the UK to plant nearly 300 Tiny Forests (Wee Forests in Scotland) – bringing the benefits of a forest right into the heart of our cities and urban spaces. 💚 All our Tiny Forests are planted, maintained and monitored with the help of local volunteers, businesses and schools – creating a real sense of ownership and impact as they support nature on their doorstep. We’re thrilled to be part of a bigger movement that has taken root across the globe. 🌱📰 We're proud to announce that our newest research paper, ‘Saplings of Significance’, has been published by the British Ecological Society. Saplings of Significance, authored by our brilliant science team, explores how cultural value can shape more successful, enduring tree-planting initiatives. While planting trees is a central strategy in the global response to climate change and biodiversity loss, many efforts fall short due to a lack of local engagement and long-term stewardship. The paper identifies nine distinct pathways through which trees gain cultural meaning, from ancestral heritage and local storytelling to recreational use and spiritual symbolism. By centring these cultural connections, tree-planting programmes can do more than absorb carbon: they can revitalise landscapes, strengthen community identity, and deepen public investment in nature-based solutions. As our Research Lead, Claire Narraway, says: “If we want forests that thrive into the future, we must honour the roots they grow from - the cultural stories, memories, and meanings that bind people and place.” Read the full paper here: https://lnkd.in/eirx2BXU
