EMBL-UNESCO fellows share their stories 🌍 Maame Ekua Acquah from the University of Ghana became interested in the host-viral dynamics of SARS-COV-2 while working in a medical laboratory testing company during the pandemic. As the only employee with a molecular biology background, she helped set up and run the COVID-19 testing facility. She is now doing her PhD research on the host-viral dynamics of SARS-CoV-2, with particular emphasis on rural and urban communities in Ghana. Oluwaremilekun Grace Ajakaye established the Laboratory of Molecular Parasitology and Genomics of Neglected Tropical Diseases at Adekunle Ajasin University, Nigeria. Her research focuses on the genetic variations that drive parasite transmission and evolution. Maame and Grace recently finished three-month residencies at EMBL Grenoble and EMBL-EBI respectively, where they had a chance to expand their networks, develop their skills, and exchange knowledge with colleagues worldwide. Meet Francesco Costa 🇮🇹 – a PhD student at EMBL-EBI, focusing on protein science. Francesco is fascinated by protein design and has been working to improve low-confidence #AlphaFold protein structure predictions. He’s also exploring proteins called fibrillar adhesins, which are used by bacteria to attach to surfaces and interact with each other. These proteins might be interesting for industrial applications. The amount of scientific literature is growing every day and so is the challenge of keeping up with it all. LitSumm is a new tool that addresses this, using large language models (LLMs) to generate high-quality summaries of noncoding RNA (ncRNA) literature. In a recent study, LitSumm was able to automatically curate text from over 177,000 open access articles to generate text summaries for over 4,600 ncRNA sequences. These are now available to view in the RNAcentral resource. This research highlights that automated literature summarisation is feasible with the current generation of LLMs, provided that careful prompting and automated checking are applied.
