For a career first, I had the privilege of delivering a keynote in a suit at a dinner. My talk explored the inequities that persist in access, progression and success of racially minoritised people in higher education and beyond. It was brilliant to witness first hand Shaheen Myers vision and leadership in bringing educators, students, leaders and poets together for RENDLeeds. It was refreshing to be in a room where there was a shared commitment to tackling racism. Haris Ahmed lyricism was inspirational as always and Sreeja Bhowmick reminded us that anti-racism is as important as ever for our young people and that we cannot wait another 50 years to experience an antiracist UK. I also had the privilege of meeting Bushra Nasir CBE DL, the first Muslim female headteacher in the UK, the shoulder of a giant we are standing on and whose legacy continues to inspire generations of educators and leaders.

At the Race, Equity and Social Justice: Looking backwards to look forwards conference, it was brilliant to bring together Muslim scholars in Higher Education to reflect on their lived experiences of resilience, Islamophobia and the systems that need changing. We heard from contributors to Uncovering Islamophobia in Higher Education: Supporting Muslim Students and Staff, chaired by the ever-inspirational Dr Maisha Islam, one of the book’s co-editors.
