Sound changes how a space feels before you’ve even processed why. Behind that instinctive reaction is science: Our brains evolved to read sound as information about safety, connection, and the life around us. But today’s environments are filled with man-made noise that our biology doesn’t recognize or reads as threats. By designing with positive, biophilic sound, we can reintroduce the organic patterns our brains respond to naturally – creating spaces that intuitively feel comfortable and help people think and feel their best. Workplaces generate more data than ever. But it’s often not bringing clarity, or being used at all. Much of it sits in silos. Occupancy data might tell us how many people are in a space, but not how they’re using it. Is it for quiet focus, collaboration, or a mix of the two? The International WELL Building Institute (IWBI)'s new report, "Investing in Health Pays Back", makes a compelling case for the business value of healthier buildings, and it highlights the role of soundscaping in enhancing cognition and wellbeing. The IWBI cites evidence that nature sounds can boost cognitive performance and showcases GSK’s new London HQ, where Moodsonic’s biophilic soundscaping contributed to an 8% improvement in decision-making.
