How do we solve the world’s greatest energy challenges? Today, we took that question head-on at our second annual Innovation Day at the historic SoWa Power Station in Boston. We spent the day exploring how innovation, especially through National Grid Partners and the startups it has invested in, is bringing new technologies to help us build a smarter, more efficient grid and transform our industry for the better. NEWS: We've boosted the capacity of over 275km of overhead lines, which could save consumers an estimated ~£20m annually and power an additional 75,000 homes per year. How? Our overhead lines team worked with LineVision - part of the National Grid Partners investment portfolio - to install Dynamic Line Rating (DLR) sensors on circuits between one of the major North-South power system boundaries. The sensors highlight spare capacity on overhead power lines allowing for the integration of more renewable power. A 60s glimpse of how the sensors are installed 👇 #Technology #Transmission

Our 2024-25 Annual Report is now live. It's a year since we announced our £60 billion five-year investment plan and refocused our strategy on energy networks. I’m hugely proud of all we’ve achieved at National Grid in that time. I’d like to share a few of my personal highlights: we’ve made excellent progress with our Great Grid Upgrade in the UK – of our 17 ASTI transmission projects, all six in the first wave are under construction; our $4 billion Upstate Upgrade in New York is on track – it’s the largest upgrade of the upstate electricity transmission grid in a century; we've agreed our $2 billion plan to modernise the electricity grid in Massachusetts with the regulator – increasing network capacity and resilience; we're continuing the development of our LionLink interconnector, the second to link the British and Dutch electricity grids, reinforcing security of supply; and we’re investing in innovation - $100 million in AI start-ups, in addition to the $500 million we’ve already invested in tech start-ups. National Grid is now well positioned to take advantage of the significant growth opportunities ahead while ensuring the safe and reliable flow of energy for our customers and supporting economic growth in our communities.
